A Life of Lines and Light

Paul Thesing began his path far from the easel, pursuing studies in Zurich with the intention of becoming a chemist. This scientific foundation perhaps informed the precision found in his later work as a painter, draftsman, and illustrator. Around 1907, his interests shifted toward the expressive power of drawing. He found early opportunities to share his talent through satirical journals like Der Neue Postillon in Switzerland and later joined the weekly publication Nebelspalter.

His wanderings took him to Paris, where he moved within a circle of German artists gathered around the Café du Dôme. During this time, his work reached wider audiences through magazines such as L'Assiette au beurre, where he contributed illustrations for specific themes like maternity and human skin. These years in France allowed him to connect with contemporaries like Rudolf Levy and Oskar Moll, grounding his development in the active artistic life of Montparnasse.

From Caricature to Canvas

Thesing's career was marked by a versatility that saw him move between the sharp wit of a caricaturist and the more structured styles of New Objectivity and Expressionism. In 1924, his contributions to the arts were recognized with the Georg-Büchner Prize. During his decade in Darmstadt, he worked to revitalize the local art scene through the Darmstäter Sezession, bridging different artistic currents. His ability to adapt was also evident in his work as a film decorator for Tobis Film, where he contributed to productions such as Die Entlassung and Philharmoniker.

His travels often dictated the subjects of his art. While living in Mallorca during the First World War, he published caricatures in Spanish periodicals. Later, his time spent in places like Collioure, Ibiza, and Ischia brought new landscapes and figures into his repertoire. Some of his notable works include:

A Final Chapter in Darmstadt

The later years of Thesing's life saw him returning to the places that had shaped his early career. After traveling through France, Spain, and Italy, he found himself back in Germany. Following the end of the Second World War, he returned to live in Darmstadt, where he participated in the reconstruction of the city. He remained an active presence in the region's artistic and civic life until his death in 1954.
