For artworks or reproductions larger than 105 cm (approximately 41 inches) on any side, the frame will be shipped as a kit, disassembled. This method ensures safe delivery and prevents damage during transport.

Professional assembly required - this is not a DIY product.
The kit must be assembled and the canvas stretched by an experienced professional framer, using wood glue (not supplied), a canvas stretching plier and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries. Incorrect assembly or uneven canvas tension can permanently damage the artwork and is not covered by our warranty.

  • All solid wood bars are included, precisely cut to size.

  • Assembled with the screws provided, plus wood glue for the corner joints, which is not supplied and must be sourced by your framer.

  • Professional tools are required and not included: a canvas stretching plier (tensioner) and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries.

Important:
The corner joints require wood glue, the bars must be held with clamps until the glue is fully dry, and tightening the canvas on the assembled frame requires a canvas stretching plier. None of these are included in the kit. Please arrange an experienced professional framer before ordering this size.

John Frederick Kensett

John Frederick Kensett

1816 - 1872, United States of America

Artist Biography

Early Life, Family and Training

John Frederick Kensett was born on March 22, 1816, in Cheshire, Connecticut. His early years were shaped by the steady, precise work of his father, Thomas Kensett, an English-born engraver. By the age of 12, the boy was already working within his father's engraving studio, learning the discipline of the line and the careful handling of tools. This early immersion in the mechanics of reproduction provided a foundation of technical accuracy that would remain with him long after he turned to painting.

The training continued under the guidance of both his father and his uncle, Alfred Daggett. These years were spent mastering the intricacies of engraving, a craft requiring a patient eye for detail and a steady hand. He remained in the New Haven area, working as an engraver until about 1838. This period of labor focused on the controlled reproduction of images, a stark contrast to the atmospheric landscapes he would later pursue, yet the meticulousness of the engraver's bench clearly informed his later approach to light and form.

Artistic Development and Travels

In 1840, Kensett left for Europe to study painting. He did not travel alone; Asher Durand and John William Casilear were with him during this period. While abroad, he met Benjamin Champney, and the two spent time traveling together. These years away from home allowed him to refine his eye before he returned to the United States in 1847.

Once back in America, his focus shifted toward the varied landscapes of the continent. He spent much of his time traveling through the Northeast, observing the terrain of New England and New York. His movements also took him much further west to the Colorado Rockies. He sought out these specific locations to capture the light and form of the land.

Technique and Luminist Style

Kensett’s brushwork moved away from the heavy, dramatic compositions of the traditional Hudson River School. Instead, his later work settled into a more refined Luminist approach. He favored a sense of stillness, often choosing to paint tranquil scenery defined by a spare geometry. Rather than reaching for grand, sweeping topography, he looked for the quiet shifts in light and color that occur across a landscape. This preference for restraint allowed him to focus on the way atmosphere settles over a scene, creating a feeling of calm through muted tones and soft, unselfconscious strokes.

To achieve this particular quality of light, Kensett used a specific technical method. He applied multiple layers of thin, translucent glazes over his canvases. This painstaking process allowed light to pass through the paint layers and reflect back from the surface, giving the work a glow that seems to come from within the scene itself. This technique was essential for capturing the way sunlight filters through foliage or rests upon a glass-smooth body of water. His focus remained on the subtle, fleeting moments of illumination that define the character of the American landscape.

Legacy and Institutional Contributions

Kensett’s influence extended far beyond the quiet scenes he painted on canvas. He was deeply involved in the structures that supported American art, helping to build the foundations of its major institutions. He was a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and served as a trustee there in 1870. His commitment to his peers was evident through his leadership in the Artists' Fund Society, where he acted as president from 1865 to 1870. He also held a position on the U.S. Capitol Art Commission, having been appointed to it in 1859.

His standing within the professional community was marked by his election as a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1849. This recognition came as he moved away from the more dramatic landscapes of his predecessors, focusing instead on a restrained, clear approach to light and composition. This shift in how the American landscape was perceived helped shape the direction of landscape painting for those who followed him.

  • Mount Washington from the Valley of Conway (1851)
  • Eatons Neck, Long Island (1872)
  • Lake George (ca. 1860)

Where to See His Works Today

His paintings are scattered across several major collections, often found in rooms dedicated to the development of American landscape painting. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York holds the largest concentration, with thirteen of his works in their care. You might find his studies of light on water or coastal scenes among their permanent galleries. Other significant pieces are held in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Detroit Institute of Arts, which each house two paintings.

In the United States, his presence extends to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, which contains two of his works. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco also holds one of his paintings. These locations allow for a close look at how he handled the subtle shifts in atmosphere and the quietude of the American wilderness. Some of his specific subjects include:
