His creative journey began early; while attending high school in Brooklyn, New York, he was accepted as a student at the National Academy of Design in New York, where he studied from 1924 to 1927.

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Halfant produced hundreds of paintings that captured the street scenes of New York City, often depicting his neighbors, parents, friends, shopkeepers, and pushcart vendors. His work also included illustrations for the 1948 study Jazz, A People's Music by Sidney Finkelstein and various record covers for EMS Recordings.

His subject matter drew inspiration from Biblical stories and the works of Jewish authors such as S. Ansky, Sholem Aleichem, and I. L. Peretz. He frequently visited synagogues to depict various aspects of religious services and holiday observances.
