A Life in Lines and Light
Jacob Bendien was born in Amsterdam in 1890, a child of the Netherlands who would eventually find his creative footing far from home. In 1911, he moved to Paris, a city that offered him new perspectives and important companions. It was there that he met the sculptor-painter John Rädecker and the painter Jan van Deene. These friendships were more than mere social connections; they became the foundation for a shared artistic language.
Together with these peers, Bendien helped develop what they called Absolute schilderkunst, or Absolute art. This approach to abstraction emerged from their collective presence at the Amsterdam "Independents" art club show in 1913. His work often sought to translate the inner self through a careful arrangement of colors and lines. In certain years, such as 1916 and 1917, he shared his explorations of fantasy heads and abstract drawings with the public.
Artistic Pursuits and Recognition
While his time in Paris shaped his early development, Bendien’s reach extended across Europe. He participated in the 16th Venice Biennale in 1928, an event that brought his work to a broader international audience. His practice was not limited to the brush; he also worked as a graphic artist and engaged with lithography and sculpture.
His output included various forms of expression, from compositions like Peinture I and Peinture II to more figurative or semi-abstract works such as Canal. Some of his pieces, including BOOM MET TRAMRAILS, have reached significant values at auction. His legacy is held in several important institutions, including:
- Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam
- Museum Arnhem, Arnhem
- Museum Belvédère, Heerenveen
The Final Years
Bendien’s life was cut short by tuberculosis. He passed away in 1933 in Hilversum. Though his career was relatively brief, the foundations he laid through his involvement with the Amsterdam art scene and his pursuit of absolute abstraction left a mark on the modern movement. His family connections also linked him to the broader history of Dutch art, as his niece, Eva Bendien, would later become a notable gallery owner in Haarlem and Amsterdam.
