The Life and Artistic Evolution of Hans Strigl

Born in Linz, Austria, Hans Strigl was a painter who began his artistic journey after completing his studies in 1924. While he pursued a professional career in the school system, serving as a state school inspector and teacher, he simultaneously developed his skills as an autodidact. His early creative output focused on floral subjects, eventually transitioning into portraits and landscapes. A significant shift occurred when, at the age of 46, he produced his first non-objective work, marking his emergence as one of the first abstract painters in Upper Austria.

Strigl’s approach to composition was deeply personal, seeking to translate internal experiences into visual forms. He viewed the connection between music and visual structure as a form of meditation, utilizing transparency and the luminosity of predominantly light colors to express the immaterial. His commitment to the arts was further evidenced by his role in founding the Professional Association of Visual Artists of Upper Austria, where he served as the first president.
