Early Life, Family and Training
Gerda Stryi was born on May 20, 1905, in Katowice. At the age of sixteen, she entered the State Academy of Art and Applied Arts in Breslau. This period of study brought her into the classrooms of Oskar Moll, Otto Mueller, and Konrad von Kardoff. These years in Breslau shaped her technical foundation through the guidance of these specific teachers.
In 1923, while living in Breslau, she married Erich Leitgeb, a painter and art teacher. Their lives were closely linked through their shared practice. By 1935, the political climate shifted, and the National Socialists classified the works of Gerda Stryi as "Degenerate Art." This designation resulted in a ban on her exhibitions.
Life and Activity in Breslau
The years in Breslau were marked by a sudden shift in how her work was received. After the seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933, her paintings were classified as "degenerate art," and she faced a ban on exhibiting her work. To keep her hands busy with paint, she took a position as a stage painter at the theater in Breslau. This work allowed her to continue her practice through the design of stage decorations, finding a way to remain an artist even when the galleries were closed to her.
The end of the Second World War in 1945 brought a forced departure. Following the conflict, she was expelled from her home and fled from Breslau. This period of displacement was a time of movement and searching. During her travels, she moved through various landscapes, including Norway, France, and parts of Southern Europe, such as Italy, Corsica, and Greece.
Artistic Life in Wiesbaden
After several intermediate stops, Gerda Stryi settled in Wiesbaden with her husband in 1949. This period marked a significant shift in her surroundings and her professional community. She became a founding member of the Künstlergruppe 50 in Wiesbaden, establishing herself within the local art scene. Her involvement in the city's cultural life continued through her service on the board of the Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, a position she held from 1972 to 1980.
The year 1950 brought a personal turning point when her husband died. Following his passing, she took on the responsibility of painting the supraportas in the Wiesbaden Theater Colonnades. This task was a significant undertaking, requiring both physical and artistic effort to complete the frescoes that decorate the entrances of the Hessischen Staatstheater. These works remain part of the city's architectural fabric.
Later Years and Death
Gerda Stryi remained active at her easel until shortly before her death. She lived through the changing landscape of post-war Germany, maintaining her practice in Wiesbaden. Her focus stayed on the landscapes and still lifes that had long defined her vision. Even in her final years, the act of painting remained a constant part of her daily life.
She died on October 31, 1992, in Wiesbaden at the age of 87. She was laid to rest in the grave of her husband at the Südfriedhof in Wiesbaden. In July 2026, the city of Wiesbaden named her grave site an honorary grave.
Legacy and Where to See Works
The preservation of her artistic estate is managed by the Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Stiftung Kulturwerk Schlesien e. V. in Würzburg. Her paintings and drawings continue to find their way back into public view through specific exhibitions. On the 30th anniversary of her death, a special exhibition was held at Haus Schlesien in Königswinter to bring her work into the light once more.
Recent and upcoming efforts to display her work include a scheduled exhibition at the Muzeum Miejskie Wrocławia for 2025/2026. This follows a dedicated exhibition titled "Gerda Stryi-Leitgeb. Powrót wielkiej malarki," which was organized at the same museum for the period between September 2025 and January 2026.
