The Evolution of a Geometric Visionary
Born in Cleveland, United States, Charles Biederman began his artistic journey at the Cleveland Art Institute before attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After receiving the Paul Trebeilcock Prize, he departed from formal schooling in 1929. His career saw him living in Chicago, New York City, and Paris, eventually settling in Red Wing, Minnesota. During his time in Paris, he encountered prominent artists such as Picasso, Mondrian, and Miró, and was influenced by Fernand Léger. However, Biederman eventually moved away from biological forms, choosing instead to pursue strictly geometric, abstract shapes. This shift led him to abandon traditional painting in favor of three-dimensional reliefs after 1937, often utilizing non-traditional materials like wire, string, and glass panes.
Structurism and Intellectual Legacy
In the 1950s, Biederman introduced the term Structurism to define his vividly painted three-dimensional geometric reliefs, a distinction he made from Constructivism and De Stijl. His work was featured in significant exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1976 and a major show at the Walker Art Center in 1965. Beyond his visual practice, Biederman was a prolific author who self-published more than a dozen books regarding art. He also maintained a significant correspondence with the physicist David Bohm, which was later published as The Bohm-Biederman Correspondence: Creativity in Art and Science. His estate was ultimately entrusted to the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota.
