His father, Franz Steinfeld, was a man who worked in the arts, and this lineage shaped the path Wilhelm would eventually follow. He grew into a painter and landscape painter, focusing his attention on the natural world.
His life was lived through the observation of scenery and the quiet details of the land. He spent his years capturing the light and form of the landscapes around him. This work continued until his death in Bad Ischl on September 8, 1854. He was 38 years old when he passed away.
Notable Works and Achievements
His early work shows a focus on the specific textures of the Austrian landscape. In 1834, he produced Motiv aus Hallstatt, an oil on canvas. By 1841, his brush moved toward broader views, as seen in Weite Landschaft im Salzkammergut, an oil on canvas. He also worked with lighter, more delicate mediums, leaving behind Landschaft am Fluss, a piece rendered in pencil and watercolor on paper.
The lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut region appear frequently in his output. He captured the stillness of the water in Mountain Lake in 1846, a year that also saw the creation of Bjergsø. His attention to the Dachstein massif is evident in his depictions of the Gosau area. He painted Front Gosau Lake towards Dachstein in 1848, and he also produced an undated oil on wood titled Vorderer Gosausee gegen Dachstein.
