The Life and Artistic Evolution of Philippe Vandenberg

Philippe Vandenberg was a Belgian painter born in 1952. Raised in Sint-Denijs-Westrem, near Ghent, he grew up in a bourgeois family and spoke both French and Dutch at home. After studying literature and art history at Ghent University, he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Art of Ghent in 1972. In 1982, he changed his name from Vandenberghe to Vandenberg. His early work included a series of figurative Kruisigingen (Crucifixions), for which he received the Prix Emile Langui at the Prix Jeune Peinture Belge in 1981.

Vandenberg's practice underwent several radical shifts throughout his career. In 1982, he created his Splinter Paintings, deconstructing the human figure into black and white shapes arranged in rhythmic grids. His later work incorporated motifs from graffiti art, comic books, and world politics, including swastikas and portraits of political or religious leaders. During the mid-nineties, he explored Christian iconography and used his own blood for a series of drawings. In his later years, his work featured geometric compositions, letters, and words on monochrome canvases.
