The Life and Art of Georg Vischer
Georg Vischer was a German painter, etcher, and graphic artist. His career was marked by his role as a court painter to Maximilian I in Munich, a position secured by 1621. His artistic output included works such as Christus und die Ehebrecherin from 1637, as well as Die zwölf Apostel and Die Gefangennahme Christi. His skill was such that some of his works were long considered originals, and some pieces attributed to Dürer are believed to be his work.
Vischer's technical range allowed him to transform various mediums, such as creating oil paintings from works originally known only as woodcuts. In his 1637 painting Christus und die Ehebrecherin, he incorporated a self-portrait of Dürer from 1500 to depict the figure of Jesus, and he included three self-portraits of himself within the composition.
