A Life of Landscapes and Panoramas

Ernest Marché was a French landscape painter and museum curator. Born in Nemours, France, he pursued his artistic training at the École des arts décoratifs before entering the Académie Julian. There, he studied under Jules Lefebvre, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant, and Tony Robert-Fleury. His early success was marked by his 1891 presentations at the Salon des artistes français, where he focused on the landscapes of the banks of the Loing.

Beyond individual canvases, Marché contributed to monumental collective works known as panoramas. These large-scale, circular paintings were designed for concave interior walls. His involvement in these grand projects included:

Travels and Curatorial Legacy

Marché's work was deeply influenced by his travels, particularly his 1907 journey to Algeria following a travel grant from the Exposition coloniale de Marseille. This period saw him capture the light and landscapes of the region, resulting in works such as Alger, Village sur l'oued El-Kantara and Bâb Darb vieux Biskra. He also traveled to Brazil in 1908 to study the landscape for the Brussels exposition.

In addition to his painting career, Marché served as the curator of the Château-Musée in his hometown of Nemours, a position he held until his death in Paris. His artistic legacy is preserved through various collections, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper and the Château-Musée de Nemours, which holds his studio fonds.
