The Life and Career of Daniel Woge
Daniel Woge was a German painter and drawer born in Berlin. After training under Antoine Pesne, he was summoned to Neustrelitz by Adolphus Frederick IV to serve as his court painter. He remained in the town until his death in 1797. His artistic output was diverse, ranging from portraits of Adolphus Frederick and his family to altarpieces, such as the one created for the Nikolaikirche in Friedland. Additionally, Woge produced drawings that were utilized by others for the creation of engravings.
In 1770, Woge was commissioned by Crown Prince Charles to paint a series in oils depicting the Prillwitz idols. These original paintings were later the subject of engravings by Johann Conrad Krüger for the 1771 volume Die gottesdienstlichen Alterthümer der Obotriten aus dem Tempel zu Rhetra, am Tollenzer-See, a work co-authored by Andreas Gottlieb Masch and Woge himself.
