Contardo Maria Tomaselli

1827 - 1877

The Architectural Vision of Contardo Maria Tomaselli

Born in the historic region of Bologna, Italy, Contardo Maria Tomaselli emerged as a master of precision and decorative elegance during the nineteenth century. His artistic journey was deeply rooted in the prestigious traditions of the Accademia bolognese di belle arti, where he honed his technical prowess under the guidance of esteemed masters. Studying ornament with Antonio Basoli and mastering the complexities of perspective with Francesco Cocchi, Tomaselli developed a unique ability to blend structural accuracy with ornamental beauty. His early years were marked by significant academic recognition, as he secured numerous school prizes between 1840 and 1847, followed by even more prestigious academic awards for his expertise in perspective and ornament from 1846 to 1854.

The trajectory of his career saw him move beyond the borders of Bologna, extending his influence into the Venetian artistic landscape. In 1850, he was called to teach at the Academy of Venice, likely serving as an assistant to Callisto Zanotti. This period in the Veneto region profoundly shaped his creative interests; rather than pursuing the dramatic world of theatrical scenography, Tomaselli turned his gaze toward the delicate art of decoration and the captivating genre of vedutismo, or view painting. His hands brought life to various architectural spaces, decorating rooms within the palace of Ambrogio Lugo outside Bologna, as well as significant portions of Villa Mocenigo in Bassano and the Guarnieri apartment in Feltre.

A Legacy of Detail and Light

Tomaselli’s body of work is characterized by a meticulous devotion to detail and an extraordinary command over light and space. As a specialist in perspective and ornament, his compositions often captured the grandeur of architectural landmarks with a clarity that bordered on the scientific, yet remained imbued with artistic grace. His repertoire included diverse formats, from lithographic collections like I pittoreschi dintorni della Porretta, published in 1850, to evocative colored watercolors commissioned by Pietro Neri Baraldi, which depicted the iconic Piazza di S. Marco and the staircase of the Palazzo Ducale in Venice.

His contributions to the art of view painting are perhaps most notably seen in his series of Vedute di Venezia, which were presented at major exhibitions, including the 1855 exhibition and the 1867 triennial exhibition. These works, along with his Vedute dell’Archiginnasio from 1849, demonstrate his ability to translate the structural majesty of Italian architecture into captivating visual narratives. By 1860, his reputation had brought him full circle, as he was appointed professor of ornament at the Academy of Bologna, ensuring that his mastery of decorative precision would be passed down to future generations of artists.
