The Life and Art of Auguste Mathieu
Born in Dijon, France, Auguste Mathieu was a versatile artist who worked as a painter, engraver, lithographer, and architectural painter. A student of Pierre-Luc-Charles Ciceri, Mathieu began exhibiting at the Salon at the age of twenty-six in 1833, a practice he maintained until his death in Paris. These architectural subjects were often reproduced through lithography. Beyond his travels, he painted numerous monuments and genre scenes throughout France, presenting his work in exhibitions organized by local artistic societies.
Mathieu was a member of the Société des artistes français and the Société orientale de Paris. His professional achievements were recognized with a third-class medal from the Salon jury in 1842 and the distinction of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1859.
