The Academic Journey of Aleksander Stankiewicz
Born in Warsaw, Aleksander Stankiewicz began his artistic path at a young age, participating in exhibitions in Warsaw starting from the age of sixteen. His formal training led him to the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg in 1843, where he studied under professors Aleksey Markov and Karl Bryullov. As a pensioner of the Kingdom of Poland, his education was supported by the state budget. His talent was recognized early when, in 1845, he was awarded two silver medals—both a large and a small medal—from the Academy of Arts for a portrait painted from life. Following his graduation from the academy in 1846, he was sent to Rome to complete his artistic education.
Life and Legacy in Rome
Stankiewicz spent much of his life residing in Rome, where he worked for various Italian patrons. His reputation reached the highest levels of the Church; his painting "Pius IX, Blessing the People," a portrait of the Pope, was so well received that he was awarded the Papal Order of Saint Sylvester. His body of work includes religious commissions for churches, such as the Chernigov Church, and portraits of notable figures like Senator Romuald Gubbe. His mastery is reflected in works held in prestigious collections, including "Italian Woman with a Child" in the State Tretyakov Gallery and "Drivers in Campania" in the State Russian Museum. He was a close friend of the artist Semiradsky, who painted a portrait of him.
