Quick facts

A Life of Art and Legacy in Zwolle

Aleida Greve was a painter from the Dutch Republic. Born in Zwolle as the daughter of Geurt Greve, a prominent beer brewer, and Lamberta Holt, she began her artistic training in 1686. Alongside her cousin Anna Cornelia and other pupils, she studied under the Dordrecht painter Wilhelmus Beurs. In 1686, at the age of sixteen, she produced a large painting measuring approximately one meter square.

Greve's personal history is closely tied to her former home on the Melkmarkt. She never married and used her testament to ensure her house would become a rest home for women known as the Vrouwenhuis. She decorated her sitting room with various paintings, including works by the women of Zwolle and paintings on the doors.

The Collection of the Vrouwenhuis

While little remains of her various genre styles outside of her former home, the regent's room of the Vrouwenhuis serves as a preserved collection. Notable items include:

  • A self-portrait featuring a decorative mirror dated 1689.
  • A decorative mirror.
  • Paintings on the doors depicting landscapes.

The collection was maintained according to her wishes, keeping the room as it was at the time of her death. This space contains works by Beurs' other pupils and various local or visiting artists.
