A Trio of Enigmatic Beings: The Raw Allure of Thomas Riesner

In the captivating realm of Art Brut, few works command attention with such immediate, primal energy as Go in 1(1) by the German artist Thomas Riesner. Created in 2023, this intimate piece serves as a profound window into the artist's psyche, presenting a trio of wide-eyed creatures that seem to exist on the threshold between dreams and reality. The composition is strikingly centered, featuring three distinct entities standing side by side, their large, searching eyes directed toward an unseen point beyond the frame. This gaze creates an immediate sense of tension and curiosity, pulling the viewer into their silent, watchful vigil.

The brilliance of this work lies in its masterful use of color and contrast to define character and space. Riesner utilizes a vibrant, almost rhythmic palette where each creature is anchored by a distinct chromatic atmosphere: a deep, passionate red on the left, a serene and contemplative blue in the center, and a soft, whimsical pink on the right. This deliberate separation of backgrounds does more than just organize the composition; it creates three miniature worlds within a single frame, suggesting that while these beings share a physical space, they inhabit vastly different emotional landscapes.

Technique and the Beauty of Imperfection

Executed with the precision and fluidity of Indian Ink, the technique behind Go in 1(1) is fundamental to its emotional resonance. The medium allows for a sharp, graphic clarity that defines the silhouettes of the monsters, yet it retains an organic, slightly unpredictable quality characteristic of Riesner's experimental approach. The ink flows with a certain raw intensity, lending the creatures a texture that feels both ancient and contemporary. This choice of medium is essential to the Art Brut aesthetic, as it avoids the polished artifice of academic painting in favor of something more direct, visceral, and honest.

For collectors and interior designers, this piece offers a unique opportunity to introduce a conversation starter into any curated space. The small-scale format of 21 x 15 cm makes it an ideal jewel for a gallery wall or a sophisticated vignette in a modern study. Because the work relies on such high-contrast colors and bold shapes, it possesses a graphic strength that can anchor a room, providing a focal point that is both playful and deeply thought-provoking. A high-quality reproduction of this piece allows the intricate details of the ink strokes and the vibrancy of the primary tones to shine, bringing a touch of German contemporary expressionism into the home.

Symbolism and Emotional Resonance

Beyond its striking visual surface, Go in 1(1) invites deep contemplation regarding the nature of perception and existence. The "monsters" depicted are not figures of horror, but rather vessels for emotion—their large eyes acting as mirrors for the viewer's own curiosity and vulnerability. There is a poignant sense of transitoriness within the work, a theme often explored in Riesner’s broader oeuvre, where the ephemeral moment of a glance is captured forever in ink. The contrast between the red, blue, and pink backgrounds can be interpreted as the spectrum of human feeling: passion, melancholy, and tenderness existing simultaneously.

To possess or display a reproduction of this work is to embrace the beauty of the unrefined and the power of the subconscious. It is an invitation to look closer, to question what lies off-camera, and to find wonder in the strange and the unexpected. For those seeking art that transcends mere decoration to offer a profound emotional connection, Riesner’s Go in 1(1) stands as a testament to the enduring power of raw, unbridled expression.
