Artist Biography
A Life Between Nations
Edgar Jené was a German-French painter, graphic artist, and surrealist. Born in Saarbrücken, Germany, his artistic journey began with studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich between 1922 and 1924. Seeking further refinement, he moved to Paris, studying at the École nationale des beaux-arts, the Académie Julian, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Following a period of working as a freelance artist in Saarbrücken, he emigrated to Vienna in 1935 due to the political climate in Germany.
Jené's life was marked by significant historical shifts. In 1937, eight of his works were confiscated from public collections in Germany as part of the "Degenerate Art" campaign. After the war, he became a promoter and mediator of Surrealism in Vienna, where he helped organize the first Surrealism exhibition. He later returned to Paris, living there until 1965, before settling in La Chapelle-Saint-André, France, where he remained until his death in 1984.
Artistic Legacy and Works
The work of Edgar Jené is characterized by a specific painterly conception, utilizing a masterful and economical use of color. His compositions often feature a muted palette of mid-tones that create a sense of harmony. Observers have noted that his imagery possesses a quality of unreality, approaching dreamlike states of the soul.
His notable works and exhibitions include:
Throughout his career, Jené exhibited extensively, including at the Galerie Flechtheim in Berlin, the Galerie Furstenberg in Paris, and the Saarlandmuseum. He was honored with the Kunstpreis des Saarlandes in 1964.
