Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he embarked on an artistic journey marked by formal training at Washington University (BFA, 1962) followed by postgraduate studies at Yale University (MFA, 1964), where he was nurtured alongside luminaries like Brice Marden, Richard Serra, Nancy Graves, and Chuck Close – a cohort that profoundly shaped the trajectory of contemporary art. His formative years included a transformative Fulbright fellowship in Italy (1966), immersing him in European artistic traditions and broadening his creative horizons. Returning to New York City, Posen swiftly established himself within Soho’s burgeoning artistic community, becoming synonymous with meticulous detail and textural exploration. Early exhibitions at Ivan Karp's OK Harris Gallery showcased his remarkable ability to capture reality with astonishing accuracy – notably ‘Fabric Over Boxes’ (1969) and ‘Cutouts’ (1971), cementing his reputation as a master of illusionistic painting.
