johann jacob steinmann, a swiss artist, lithographer, and painter, was born on september 17, 1800, in basel, switzerland. as the son of a tailor, steinmann's artistic journey began with studying lithography in 1821 under godefroy engelmann in mulhouse, france. he later continued his training with alois senefelder, the inventor of lithography.

artistic career

steinmann's work is characterized by detailed panoramic views of cities and landscapes. in 1825, he signed a contract with the brazilian government to work as their official lithographer in rio de janeiro. this led to the creation of several notable works, including vista da nossa senhora da glória e barra do rio de janeiro (view of nossa senhora da glória and mouth of rio de janeiro bay), which can be found in the pinacoteca do estado de são paulo (são paulo, brazil).
