Artist Biography
Early Life, Family and Training
Antwerp, 1 August 1856. Frans Hens enters the world as the son of a butcher. His early years in Belgium are defined by this domestic reality before the pull of the Academy takes hold. By 1872, the focus shifts toward formal discipline. He begins his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, entering a space of rigorous technical instruction.
The classroom is dominated by the presence of Jacob Jacobs. Under Jacobs' guidance, Hens navigates the foundational requirements of his craft. The training is intense, yet his temperament suggests a restlessness that the Academy cannot fully contain. At the age of 17, the stability of Antwerp is abandoned for the unknown. In 1873, he travels to America, a sudden departure that marks a break from his structured beginnings.
Expeditions and Travels to Africa
In 1886, Hens enters the Congo Free State during a brief expedition. The landscape leaves a lasting impression, prompting a second, more extensive trip between 1887 and 1888. This second venture is self-funded, undertaken entirely at his own expense after failing to secure sponsors or state support. He moves through the Bas-Congo, navigating the waters of the Congo River. The river serves as his primary artery into the interior, carrying him toward the Équateur Province.
The expedition pushes further into the river's reaches. By September 1888, he reaches the Haute-Mongala. During these months of travel, he does not merely observe; he collects. He gathers botanical specimens and produces sketches of the terrain he encounters along the riverbanks. These visual records capture the specificities of the African landscape before he returns to Belgium.
Artistic Circles and Associations
The social landscape of Antwerp’s art scene provides the backdrop for Hens' professional life. He moves within a circle of influential figures, maintaining a close friendship with Theodoor Verstraete. This connection brings him into the orbit of the Cercle Artistique of Antwerp, where exhibitions of post-impressionist art begin to reshape his perspective. He also shares frequent, innovative discussions regarding art and reality with Emile Claus, a fellow presence at local exhibitions.
Hens does not merely observe these movements; he actively helps build them. He becomes a founding member of both De XIII and Kunst van Heden (Art of Today), groups that push against the established norms of the era. His commitment to these collective efforts extends to his membership in the associations Pour l'Art and Weest U Zelve (Be Yourself). These affiliations mark him as a central figure in the shifting currents of Belgian art, bridging the gap between traditional training and the emerging avant-garde.
Technique and Artistic Style
Hens operates across multiple mediums, moving between the precision of a draftsman and the fluid application of a printmaker. As a Post-Impressionist, his approach rejects strict classicism in favor of a more immediate, sensory engagement with his subjects. He works as a painter, aquarellist, and graphic artist, often utilizing a stripped-back, sensitive line to capture the essence of a scene. This technical versatility allows him to transition from the detailed sketches of botanical specimens to the broader, more atmospheric strokes required for large-scale landscapes.
The Belgian coast provides the primary stage for his most consistent explorations. He focuses heavily on the maritime environment, specifically the Escaut, where he captures the interplay of light and water. Ships emerge as a recurring, central theme in his compositions. He renders these vessels—often angular and caught in the tension of the wind—against the shifting moods of the sea. His work frequently navigates the atmospheric transitions of the coast, focusing on the specific qualities of mist, rain, and the fading light of twilight.
Teaching and Later Years
The final chapter of Hens's career finds him returning to the academic structures of his youth. Between 1919 and 1923, he transitions from the adventurous life of a traveler to the disciplined role of an educator. He holds a teaching position at the Royal Academy, sharing his technical knowledge with a new generation of students. During this same period, his influence extends to the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, where he continues to instruct from 1919 to 1923.
His focus remains anchored in the Belgian landscape, particularly the maritime scenes of the Escaut. The ships and coastal light that defined his later output continue to command his attention. He remains a fixture in the Belgian art scene until his death. Hens passes away in his native city of Antwerp on 11 May 1928. He is 71 years old.
