For artworks or reproductions larger than 105 cm (approximately 41 inches) on any side, the frame will be shipped as a kit, disassembled. This method ensures safe delivery and prevents damage during transport.

Professional assembly required - this is not a DIY product.
The kit must be assembled and the canvas stretched by an experienced professional framer, using wood glue (not supplied), a canvas stretching plier and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries. Incorrect assembly or uneven canvas tension can permanently damage the artwork and is not covered by our warranty.

  • All solid wood bars are included, precisely cut to size.

  • Assembled with the screws provided, plus wood glue for the corner joints, which is not supplied and must be sourced by your framer.

  • Professional tools are required and not included: a canvas stretching plier (tensioner) and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries.

Important:
The corner joints require wood glue, the bars must be held with clamps until the glue is fully dry, and tightening the canvas on the assembled frame requires a canvas stretching plier. None of these are included in the kit. Please arrange an experienced professional framer before ordering this size.

Paul Falconer Poole

Paul Falconer Poole

1806 - 1879, United Kingdom

Artist Biography

A Life Immersed in Narrative and Hue

Paul Falconer Poole, a name perhaps less immediately recognized than some of his Victorian contemporaries, nevertheless occupies a significant place within the tapestry of 19th-century British art. Born in Bristol in 1806 – though some records indicate 1807 – Poole’s artistic journey was one largely forged through self-direction and an innate sensitivity to color and dramatic storytelling. Unlike many artists of his era, he lacked extensive formal training, a circumstance that arguably fostered the unique emotional depth and expressive quality that characterize his oeuvre. His beginnings were humble, rooted in the bustling port city of Bristol where his father worked as a coal merchant. This early life, while not steeped in artistic privilege, provided fertile ground for an observant mind to develop a keen eye for the human condition and the nuances of everyday existence – themes that would later permeate his work. Poole’s initial foray into the art world came with “The Well, A Scene in Naples,” exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1831 when he was just twenty-five years old. This early piece signaled a burgeoning talent for narrative composition and atmospheric rendering, hinting at the poetic sensibility that would become his hallmark.

Forging a Path Through Genre and History

The path to recognition wasn’t immediate. A seven-year gap followed before Poole exhibited “Farewell, Farewell” in 1837, but this period was not one of inactivity; rather, it likely involved honing his skills and developing the distinctive style that would soon garner attention. Subsequent works like "The Emigrant's Departure," "Hermann and Dorothea," and "The Waters of Babylon" steadily established Poole’s reputation for depicting poignant human dramas with a compelling blend of realism and emotional resonance. However, it was “Solomon Eagle Exhorting the People to Repentance During the Plague of 1665” (1843) that proved pivotal. This dramatic and powerfully rendered scene secured his standing within the artistic community, earning him a prize of £300 sterling in the Cartoon Exhibition – a significant acknowledgement of his talent. Poole’s artistic output can be broadly categorized into two distinct yet interconnected styles: idyllic pastoral scenes and dramatic historical narratives. His idyllic works, such as “May Day” (1852), exemplify his ability to capture the beauty of everyday life, often depicting rural settings with a gentle, romantic touch. These paintings are imbued with a sense of tranquility and nostalgia, offering glimpses into a world seemingly untouched by the complexities of modern life.

A Master of Color and Dramatic Flair

In contrast, Poole excelled in portraying moments of high drama and emotional intensity. Works like “The Messenger Announcing to Job the Irruption of the Sabeans” (1850), "Robert, Duke of Normandy and Arletta" (1848), and "The Prodigal Son" (1869) showcase his mastery of composition and his ability to convey profound psychological states through expressive figures and dynamic arrangements. His historical paintings, such as “The Goths in Italy” (1851), demonstrate a meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to blending historical accuracy with artistic expression, creating narratives that are both visually compelling and intellectually stimulating. Poole is particularly celebrated for his skill as a colorist – a quality evident in works like “The Seventh Day of the Decameron” (1857). Here, he achieves remarkable depth and vibrancy through a sophisticated understanding of light, shadow, and hue, imbuing the scene with an almost palpable atmosphere. This mastery of color wasn’t merely technical; it was integral to his storytelling, used to heighten emotional impact and draw the viewer into the heart of the narrative.

Recognition, Friendship, and Lasting Legacy

Poole's talent didn’t go unnoticed by the establishment. His election as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1846, followed by full Academician status in 1861, solidified his position within the British art world. He enjoyed a close friendship with landscape artist Thomas Danby (c. 1818–1886), even sharing a residence with him in Hampstead, London – a testament to their mutual artistic respect and likely influence. Throughout his later years, Poole continued to explore both pastoral and dramatic themes, producing works such as "The Mountain Path" (1853), “Solitude” (1876), and "The Lion in the Path" (1873). These paintings showcase an evolving mastery of composition and technique, demonstrating a lifelong dedication to his craft. Paul Falconer Poole passed away in 1879, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the Victorian era’s fascination with history, morality, and everyday life. His ability to blend narrative storytelling with expressive color made him a popular figure among contemporary audiences, and while perhaps not as widely known today as some of his peers, he remains an important figure in 19th-century British art – a testament to the power of self-taught talent and unwavering artistic dedication. His paintings continue to resonate with viewers, offering glimpses into a world imbued with both beauty and drama.
