Collectible Description

From the Artist: When Covid-19 took over our lives my gift and souvenir company that caters to the tourist industry came to a screeching halt. My daily 9-5 rhythm of designing the art for the products I sell was nonexistent. Suddenly I had the gift of time and the opportunity to focus on my love of abstract painting. Sadly, I could not go near my studio for many months. I was paralyzed by the forced isolation and our uncertain world. As an abstract expressionist, my work is about my feelings in the present moment. Over time, I surrendered to my life being out of my control, heard the quiet, and began to appreciate some of those seemingly trivial day to day events that make me happy. Most of all I was flooded with gratitude, just to be alive. The things that previously seemed so important, took a back seat and my endless stress was about trying to control my life. I saw how much time I wasted worrying, and the truth was I never could control anything. With this profound understanding I began this series on paper. Working on paper instead of canvas freed me to work larger than usual and each work didn’t feel so precious. My love of the process from drawing, layering paint, and color mixing was all that mattered. I could tap into what I am certain about; my momentary feelings, the marks I make that express my energy, and the joy that propels me to make art.

Artist Biography

Mary Belle Ellis: A Dream Weaver of Surreal Landscapes

Mary Elizabeth Ellis, born May 11, 1979, in Laurel, Mississippi, United States, is an American actress who has garnered considerable acclaim for her roles in television series and films. However, beyond the spotlight of Hollywood, Ellis possesses a remarkable artistic talent – she’s a painter whose work delves into the realm of surrealism and dreamscapes, blending fantastical imagery with meticulous realism. This duality reflects not only her personal interests but also informs her artistic vision, creating pieces that resonate with viewers on an emotional level. Ellis's foray into painting began as a passion project fueled by childhood fascination with fantasy literature and visual storytelling. Influenced by artists like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte – masters of illusion and subconscious exploration – she honed her skills through dedicated practice and experimentation. Her technique is characterized by layering textures and colors to achieve depth and luminosity, capturing fleeting moments of imagination with astonishing precision. She often utilizes mixed media, incorporating acrylics alongside charcoal or graphite to build up intricate compositions that invite contemplation. Ellis’s breakthrough came with her recurring role as The Waitress on FX's “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” where she showcased her ability to portray nuanced characters within comedic contexts. Simultaneously, her portrayal of Nick Caroline in “New Girl” cemented her presence in popular television culture and allowed her to explore themes of vulnerability and connection. Further bolstering her career were appearances in "Perfect Couples" and "The Grinder," demonstrating versatility across genres. More recently, she captivated audiences with her performance as Gary Anita’s mother in Paul Thomas Anderson's “Licorice Pizza,” solidifying her reputation as a gifted performer and storyteller. Despite the demands of her acting career, Ellis maintains an unwavering commitment to her artistic pursuits. Her paintings explore themes of memory, desire, and transformation—often depicting solitary figures adrift in ethereal landscapes populated by symbolic elements. These images aren’t merely aesthetically pleasing; they serve as portals into inner worlds, prompting viewers to confront their own subconscious anxieties and aspirations. Ellis's work stands apart from many contemporary artists due to its ability to evoke profound feelings of nostalgia and wonder. Ellis’s artistic journey continues to evolve, driven by a desire to push boundaries and challenge conventions. She actively seeks inspiration from diverse sources—music, literature, and personal experiences—incorporating these influences into her creative process. Her dedication to craft ensures that each piece retains an element of spontaneity alongside meticulous planning. Ultimately, Mary Belle Ellis’s art embodies the spirit of surrealism: a celebration of imagination and a profound reflection on the human condition.
