Type the width and the height you need, to fit your frame or your wall. A print can only be cut, never made bigger than the picture, so a size with a different shape loses a part of the image. Artist Biography
The Munich Years and Prague Training
Kassa, 1864. A child is born into a world that will soon see him move across borders. By 1883, the Csordák family settles in Munich, placing the young Lajos in the heart of a shifting European landscape. He begins his formal study around 1880, finding his footing in the rigorous atmosphere of the era. The path leads him to Prague, where between 1889 and 1895, he enters the Academy of Fine Arts. Here, the influence of the Czech landscape painter Julius Mařák takes hold. Under this guidance, Csordák refines a gaze for the natural world.
The transition from student to established figure occurs through his connection to the Mánes Union of Fine Arts. He moves within these circles, absorbing the shifting currents of late 19th-century aesthetics. His work begins to reflect the light and atmosphere of the Impressionist movement, though he maintains a specific focus on the terrain of his home regions.
A Landscape of Light and Pastel
The brushwork of Lajos Csordák finds its most intimate expression in the use of dry materials and pastels. He specializes in landscapes, capturing the quiet shifts of the seasons across the Slovak and Hungarian territories. His compositions often center on specific topographical features: the ruggedness of the Tatra mountains, the stillness of a swamp, or the heavy presence of a forest.
The technique varies between the soft texture of pastels and the weight of oil on canvas or board. Certain works focus on the following elements:
- Tatra motifs: capturing mountain lakes and winter scenes under the peaks.
- River and water: depicting swamps, waterfalls, and close rivers.
- Forestry: rendering pine trees, fir forests, and the gloom of deep woods.
- Rural life: portraying countrysides with grazing cows and village motifs.
The Final Years in Košice
After 1908, the movement of his life settles. He lives permanently in Košice, a period marked by a continued dedication to the landscapes of East Slovakia. His later works, such as those from 1927, show a persistent engagement with the land, even as the political borders around him undergo profound changes. He remains a figure tied to the local geography, leaving behind a body of work held in collections like the Slovak National Gallery and the East Slovak Gallery.
He passes away in Košice on 28 June 1937. The legacy he leaves is one of specific, localized observation—a record of Slanec castle, the roads of Bankov, and the light over the Tatra mountains, preserved through a lens influenced by post-impressionism.
