A Symphony of Geometry: Rediscovering Hryhorii Havrylenko
In the vast landscape of mid-century modernism, few works capture the tension between fragmentation and order as poignantly as Hryhorii Havrylenko’s 1963 masterpiece, Abstract Composition. Born in Ukraine, Havrylenko emerged from a rich artistic lineage to become a pioneer of the avant-garde, blending the structural rigor of Cubism with a uniquely soulful approach to color. This particular work serves as a profound window into the year 1963, a period where the boundaries of traditional representation were being aggressively dismantled in favor of exploring the raw, fundamental elements of visual language: line, shape, and pigment.
The painting presents a captivating deconstruction of space, where a central, elongated form acts as the anchor for an intricate dance of intersecting planes. As the eye wanders across the canvas, it encounters a rhythmic arrangement of triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids that seem to interlock like a complex, celestial puzzle. There is no traditional horizon line or vanishing point here; instead, Havrylenko utilizes overlapping shapes to suggest a shallow, pulsating depth. This flattened perspective forces the viewer to confront the two-dimensional reality of the canvas, creating an intimate dialogue between the painted surface and the observer's gaze.
The Language of Color and Form
What truly elevates this composition is Havrylenko’s masterful use of a restrained yet impactful palette. The artist avoids the chaos of excessive hues, opting instead for a sophisticated interplay of blues, greens, reds, and soft creams. These colors are not blended into seamless gradients; rather, they are applied in distinct, deliberate blocks that create sharp, energetic contrasts. This technique lends the work a structural integrity, where each color serves as a building block for the larger architectural whole. The subtle presence of pinks and whites provides moments of lightness, preventing the heavier geometric forms from feeling overly weighted or static.
The emotional resonance of the piece lies in its inherent dynamism. While the subject matter is entirely non-representational, the sharp angles and fractured edges evoke a sense of movement—as if we are witnessing a moment of structural transformation caught in mid-air. For the collector or interior designer, this artwork offers a sophisticated focal point that embodies both intellectual depth and aesthetic grace. It is a piece that does not merely decorate a room but commands it, providing a sense of modern elegance and a contemplative atmosphere that invites long periods of study and reflection.
A Legacy for the Modern Interior
Owning a reproduction of such a significant work allows one to bring the spirit of the Ukrainian avant-garde into the contemporary home. Abstract Composition is more than just an arrangement of shapes; it is a testament to the search for underlying structure within a fragmented world. Whether placed in a minimalist gallery-style setting or as a bold statement piece in a classic study, this painting resonates with anyone who appreciates the enduring power of modernist abstraction. It remains a timeless exploration of how simplicity, when executed with such precision and passion, can achieve a profound complexity.

Artist Biography
Early Life, Family and Training
Hryhorii Havrylenko entered the world on July 7, 1927, in the village of Kholopkove, located near Hlukhiv in the Sumy region. He was born into a well-off peasant family, a household of five children that once knew the relative stability of rural life. However, the winds of political upheaval reached their doorstep in 1930 when the family was dekulakized. This hardship forced them to flee to Georgia, a period of displacement that would shape the early years of his life before the family eventually resettled in Hlukhiv.
His formal path toward the arts began in earnest after the turbulence of his youth. From 1945 to 1949, he sought instruction at the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State Art School. This foundational training provided the technical grounding necessary for the complex visual language he would later develop. Seeking to deepen his mastery, he moved on to the Kyiv Art Institute, where he studied from 1949 to 1955. During these years, he divided his focus between the painting and graphics departments, a dual education that allowed him to explore both the breadth of easel painting and the precision of graphic design.
Artistic Style and Versatile Techniques
Havrylenko moved through the art world with a restless curiosity, refusing to be confined by a single medium or subject. He was a prominent figure in the Ukrainian avant-garde art movement of the 1960s, a time when the boundaries of expression were being pushed and redefined. His hand was equally at home in the quiet intimacy of book graphics as it was in the expansive reach of easel painting. He sought to capture the essence of landscapes and the character of portraits through a wide array of tools, often experimenting with the way light and shadow interacted on different surfaces.
His technical range was vast and showed a deep understanding of how different materials could alter a mood. He worked with tempera and oil on cardboard, often layering colors to achieve a specific depth, and he was equally skilled with the delicate touch of watercolor and pastel. When he turned to pen-and-ink drawings, his lines possessed a precision that contrasted with the more fluid, experimental nature of his paintings. This period of his life was defined by a bold experimentation with colors and forms, a refusal to settle for the easy or the expected.
As the years passed, his focus shifted toward the graphic arts, specifically the intricate and demanding technique of colored linocut. This specialization allowed him to explore texture and bold, graphic shapes in a way that his earlier, more painterly works had only hinted at. His ability to transition from the soft textures of pastel to the sharp, deliberate marks of a linocut reveals an artist who was constantly seeking new ways to translate his vision onto the page or the canvas.

Notable Works and Artistic Contributions
The artist’s hand moved with remarkable ease between the vastness of the canvas and the intimate scale of the printed page. Throughout his career, he dedicated much of his creative energy to the world of books, providing illustrations for over thirty different volumes. This work required a delicate touch, as he sought to translate literary spirit into visual form. In 1965, he turned his attention to Dante's Vita Nova, crafting graphics that sought to capture the essence of the text. He also brought a visual life to the characters of Panas Myrnyi's novel Chipka, demonstrating a capacity to inhabit the stories of others through his lines and colors.
His easel paintings often revealed a different, perhaps more personal, side of his vision. In 1964, he produced The Image of the Girl, a work that remains a significant part of his visual history. This was followed in 1965 by the Summer Triptych, a series that allowed him to explore the changing moods of light and season. These works show a man deeply engaged with the nuances of his subjects, whether they were the faces of women or the shifting atmosphere of a landscape.

Exhibitions and Professional Life
The professional path of Hryhorii Havrylenko was marked by both significant public recognition and the sudden disruptions common to the era. From 1955 onward, his presence in the art world grew through steady participation in republican and all-Union exhibitions. His reach extended beyond the borders of the Soviet Union when he exhibited his work in Leipzig in 1965. These appearances allowed his unique vision to meet a wider audience, establishing him as a figure of consequence within the Ukrainian art scene.
His relationship with formal institutions was complex. In the early 1960s, he sought to pass on his knowledge through teaching at the Kyiv Art Institute. However, this period of instruction was cut short when he was dismissed for ideological reasons. Despite such professional setbacks, his creative output remained undeterred. He eventually secured the opportunity to hold solo exhibitions in Kyiv, with significant shows occurring in 1974 and 1980. These exhibitions provided a space for the public to engage with his evolving mastery of color and form.
Later Years, Death and Legacy
The final years of Hryhorii Havrylenko were spent in Kyiv, where he remained until his passing on February 23, 1984. His departure left a void in the Ukrainian art scene, yet the energy he poured into his experimentation with color and form remained palpable. He had spent decades navigating the complexities of his era, moving from the academic rigor of his training to the bold, expressive language of the avant-garde. Even as his focus shifted toward the intricate precision of colored linocuts in his later years, the spirit of his earlier, more fluid works continued to resonate through the studios of his contemporaries.
His influence persists through the hands of subsequent Ukrainian artists who found inspiration in his refusal to adhere to rigid conventions. By pushing the boundaries of what Ukrainian art could express, he helped shape the cultural narratives of his time. His life remains a profound example of how an artist can use abstraction and graphic precision to find a unique voice amidst shifting political and social landscapes. The echoes of his vision are still felt in the way modern creators approach the relationship between form and emotion.
