Artwork Description

Driven by his concern about a growing historical amnesia, Fyerool Darma departs from his characteristic painting practice to present sculptures of two key figures in Singapore history: an appropriated bust of Sir Stamford Raffles by Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey, and a bustless pedestal inscribed with the name, birth and death dates of Sultan Hussein Mua’zzam Shah. Both Raffles and Sultan Hussein played pivotal roles in the signing of two treaties that resulted in the founding of modern Singapore, and this artwork seeks to uncover the relationships between them. The way these men are represented is symbolic of the partisanship between major and minor narratives in historical discourse, reiterating the sentiment that history is often written by the dominant, while the dominated are relegated to minor roles.

Artist Biography

Early Life and Artistic Foundations

Fyerool Darma, a Singaporean artist born in 1987, navigates the complexities of identity, history, and cultural consumption through a remarkably diverse artistic practice. His journey began not within the hallowed halls of art institutions—though he would later graduate from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2012—but amidst the vibrant energy of his father’s life as a wedding singer. This early exposure to celebration, culture, and performance instilled in Darma an appreciation for the visual language of life itself, a sensibility that continues to permeate his work. However, this formative experience also highlighted the practical realities faced by artists striving to make their mark outside established structures of privilege.

Darma’s initial training was rooted in painting, but he quickly expanded beyond traditional mediums, embracing sound, video, sculpture, text, and craft practices as integral components of his installations. This multidisciplinary approach reflects a deliberate rejection of categorization, allowing him to explore the nuances of Southeast Asian cultures, histories, and aesthetics with greater depth and complexity.

A Tapestry of Influences: History, Myth, and Identity

The core of Darma’s artistic inquiry lies in his exploration of what it means to be Singaporean—or perhaps more accurately, what it *means* to construct a sense of identity within the context of a rapidly evolving nation. He doesn't seek to define “Singaporeanness” but rather to deconstruct its layers, revealing the historical forces and cultural collisions that have shaped it. His work often juxtaposes seemingly disparate elements—modernist aesthetics alongside Southeast Asian traditions, global art trends with local narratives—creating a dynamic tension that challenges conventional understandings of identity and belonging.

A key theme in Darma’s oeuvre is the “absent history” of Southeast Asia. He delves into the movements of people across the region, particularly focusing on migration, colonialism, and their lasting impact on language, culture, and politics. This exploration isn't simply a matter of recovering lost narratives; it’s about understanding how these histories continue to resonate in contemporary society, shaping markers of identity and class.

Development and Major Achievements

Darma’s artistic development has been marked by a consistent willingness to experiment and push boundaries. Early works like the ‘Moyang’ series (2015) demonstrated his ability to weave together personal narratives with broader historical themes, using visual vocabulary drawn from popular culture, literature, archives, and the internet. The series explored the idea of shared ancestry—the meaning of “moyang” or ancestors in Malay—not as a direct familial connection but as a way to trace the growth of language and cultural identity across geographical boundaries.

Subsequent projects, such as ‘Monsoon Song’ (2017), further refined his approach, integrating sound and video elements into immersive installations that challenged viewers to engage with history on a visceral level. His participation in the Singapore Biennale 2016: An Atlas of Mirrors solidified his position within the regional art landscape.

More recently, Darma’s work has garnered international recognition through exhibitions at institutions like the NTU ADM Gallery (Singapore), Seoul MediaCity Biennale, and La Trobe Art Institute (Australia). His inclusion in group shows at the National Gallery Singapore and Asia Film Archive underscores his ability to connect with diverse audiences and contribute to critical conversations about contemporary art.

Historical Significance and Contemporary Relevance

Fyerool Darma’s work occupies a unique space within the Southeast Asian art scene. He is not simply documenting history; he is actively interrogating it, challenging dominant narratives and offering alternative perspectives on identity, culture, and belonging. His multidisciplinary approach—blending painting with sound, video, sculpture, and craft—reflects a broader trend towards artistic experimentation and a rejection of rigid categorization.

In an era marked by globalization and increasing cultural exchange, Darma’s exploration of the complexities of identity resonates deeply. He reminds us that identity is not fixed or monolithic but rather fluid, negotiated, and constantly evolving. His work serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of reclaiming lost narratives, challenging established power structures, and fostering a more inclusive understanding of history.

Darma’s commitment to teaching art to youths in Jurong further demonstrates his dedication to community engagement and nurturing the next generation of artists. He is not only creating compelling artwork but also actively shaping the future of the Singaporean art scene.
