François Rude (1784-1855) was a French sculptor bridging Neoclassicism & Romanticism. Famous for 'La Marseillaise' on the Arc de Triomphe, his patriotic monuments and dynamic style captured a pivotal era in France.

For artworks or reproductions larger than 105 cm (approximately 41 inches) on any side, the frame will be shipped as a kit, disassembled. This method ensures safe delivery and prevents damage during transport.
Professional assembly required - this is not a DIY product.
The kit must be assembled and the canvas stretched by an experienced professional framer, using wood glue (not supplied), a canvas stretching plier and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries. Incorrect assembly or uneven canvas tension can permanently damage the artwork and is not covered by our warranty.
All solid wood bars are included, precisely cut to size.
Assembled with the screws provided, plus wood glue for the corner joints, which is not supplied and must be sourced by your framer.
Professional tools are required and not included: a canvas stretching plier (tensioner) and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries.
Important:
The corner joints require wood glue, the bars must be held with clamps until the glue is fully dry, and tightening the canvas on the assembled frame requires a canvas stretching plier. None of these are included in the kit. Please arrange an experienced professional framer before ordering this size.

Early Life and Training
- François Rude was born in Dijon, France, on January 4, 1784, the son of a coppersmith/locksmith.
- His early life involved assisting his father's trade before demonstrating artistic talent.
- He attended François Devosges’s École de Dessin in Dijon, showcasing his burgeoning skills.
- Under the patronage of Louis Frémiet, he began studying with Pierre Cartellier in Paris at the studio of Edme Gaulle in 1805.
- In 1809, his work started gaining recognition, earning him several awards.
- He won the Prix de Rome in 1812 but was unable to travel due to political conditions.
Brussels Period and Marriage
- In 1815, Rude left Paris for Rome but ended up in Brussels with the Frémiets due to political circumstances.
- He married Sophie Frémiet, an accomplished painter, forming a formidable artistic partnership.
- While in Brussels, he executed his first bust of Louis David, gaining significant notice.
Return to Paris and Major Works
- Rude and his wife returned to Paris in 1827, where they remained until his death.
- His notable works include the statue of a Neapolitan Fisherboy Playing with a Tortoise (1831-33), displayed at the Louvre.
- He was commissioned for the Arc de Triomphe, creating the iconic sculpture "La Marseillaise" (Departure of the Volunteers of 1792) completed in 1836. This is arguably his most famous and significant work.
