While his contemporaries often leaned into the heavy, political weight of muralism, Baz Viaud focused on the meticulous. He was a painter of extreme verism. His method—applying oil paints directly to a dry surface—produced a trompe l'oeil effect so sharp that critics frequently compared his brushwork to Renaissance masters like Dürer and Botticelli. His early years in Mexico City provided a foundation built on structure rather than pure impulse. Though he initially studied architecture, his trajectory was redirected by the influence of Manuel Rodríguez Lozano.
