Ang Gerilya: A Collective Voice Shaping Philippine Art

Ang Gerilya, comprised of Jano, kube, and Zap, emerged from the vibrant artistic landscape of Quezon City, Philippines in 2008—a testament to the burgeoning creativity within Filipino university students. More than just a trio of artists, Ang Gerilya represents an ethos: experimentation, social commentary, and a refusal to confine art to traditional boundaries. Their collective journey began with a shared passion for comics and quickly expanded into diverse mediums including street art, graffiti animation, fine arts, and literature—a deliberate fusion designed to tackle complex issues facing the Philippines.

• Early Influences: The group’s formative years were steeped in the energy of Manila's urban sprawl and fueled by a desire to engage with pressing social realities. They drew inspiration from Filipino folklore, particularly tales of mythical creatures and heroic figures—elements that would later permeate their artistic vision.
• The Rise of Street Art: Ang Gerilya swiftly gained recognition for their contributions to the Philippines’ street art scene. Utilizing bold colors and striking imagery, they transformed neglected spaces into canvases for powerful messages advocating for social justice and environmental awareness. Their work isn't merely decoration; it’s a deliberate act of defiance against apathy and oppression.
• Exploring Socio-Political Themes: At the core of Ang Gerilya’s artistic practice lies an unwavering commitment to addressing critical concerns within Philippine society. From narratives exploring indigenous traditions to critiques of political corruption, their comics and murals consistently provoke dialogue and challenge conventional perspectives.

Their distinctive style blends meticulous craftsmanship with rebellious spirit. The artists employ techniques honed through rigorous academic training—precise linework in comics juxtaposed with dynamic spray paint application—demonstrating a mastery of diverse artistic approaches. This duality reflects their broader ambition: to elevate artistic expression while simultaneously serving as agents of change.
