Artist Biography

Agostino Iacurci: Bridging Tradition and Vision Through Site-Specific Art

Agostino Iacurci, born in Foggia, Italy in 1986, is an Italian artist currently residing in Berlin. His artistic journey began with formal studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, establishing a foundation for his distinctive approach to visual art – one characterized by experimentation across diverse mediums and a profound engagement with cultural narratives. From painting and sculpture to murals, installations, drawing, and printmaking, Iacurci’s practice consistently seeks to push boundaries and explore connections between past and present.
  • Early Influences: Iacurci's artistic sensibilities were nurtured by a fascination with classical literature and mythology, particularly Virgil’s *Aeneid*, which serves as recurring inspiration in his work. This intellectual grounding informs his visual language, prioritizing symbolic imagery and layered storytelling.
  • Medium Exploration & Technique: He skillfully manipulates materials – often repurposing found objects and architectural fragments – to generate images that resonate with both formal precision and conceptual depth. His technique blends meticulous detail with expressive brushstrokes, resulting in artworks that possess a palpable physicality.
Iacurci’s artistic vision is firmly rooted in the concept of “site-specific art,” where each piece responds directly to its environment. This approach isn't merely decorative; it aims to provoke dialogue about history, memory, and the relationship between humans and their surroundings. He meticulously researches locations—ranging from urban spaces to architectural ruins—to absorb their essence and translate it into visual representations that are both evocative and intellectually stimulating.
  • Notable Exhibitions & Commissions: Since 2009, Iacurci has undertaken monumental wall paintings and installations for public institutions across Europe and internationally. His commissions include prominent projects like “Ensemble” at Casa Italia in Paris and “Grüne Oase” at Tertianum Project in Frankfurt-am-Main, demonstrating his commitment to engaging with communities and shaping cultural landscapes.
  • Recognition & Awards: He garnered acclaim for his participation in the Talent Prize 2019 and the Premio Cairo 2015, cementing his position as a rising star within the contemporary art scene. His work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions and festivals globally, furthering his artistic reach.
His oeuvre encompasses a remarkable breadth of projects—from large-scale murals addressing social issues to intimate sculptural explorations of personal experience—reflecting an artist who consistently seeks new avenues for creative expression. Agostino Iacurci’s art stands as testament to the power of combining meticulous craftsmanship with conceptual ambition, forging connections between artistic tradition and visionary innovation. He continues to push boundaries in his exploration of visual storytelling and contributes significantly to the dialogue surrounding public art and its role in shaping our understanding of cultural heritage.
