Her upbringing within a wealthy textile manufacturing family provided material comfort but little solace for a spirit that chafed against societal expectat
ions and yearned for realms beyond the tangible. Expulsions from two schools – including New Hall School in Chelmsford – signaled a rebellious streak, a refusal to be molded by conventional norms.
