His story begins not within the realm of visual art, but with music. From 1955 to 1957, Poons dedicated himself to musical composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston, envisioning a career crafting sonic landscapes. However, a pivotal en
counter in 1959 irrevocably altered his path. A visit to Barnett Newman’s exhibition at French & Company ignited within him a passion for painting, prompting an immediate and complete shift in focus. He abandoned musical composition and enrolled at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, subsequently continuing his studies at the Art Students League of New York, fully embracing the visual arts as his chosen medium.
