REAL DMZ PROJECT
NOH Suntag has spent more time observing the “malfunctioning” rather than the “functioning” of division. According to him, the functioning itself is a malfunction. In this exhibition, NOH Suntag finds a view on the DMZ from where he lives, Nam-poongri in Anseong, Gyeonggi-do. He discovers the view of violence-stained urban redevelopment and traces of the tragedy in Yongsan from the Southern GP that was demolished upon an agreement betweenthe North and South. Nam- poongri, Nam-Ildang and Nam-GP are of course all different, but it is the artist’s argument that they are similar. The photograph doesn’t tell where Nam-poongri is, or Nam-Ildang and Nam-GP are. Is there a hint? ... “Division made the 38th parallel national, and the GP national. The landscape sometimes hides here and reveals there.”
