Frederik Sødring
1809 - 1862, Denmark
Artist Biography
Early Life, Family and Training
Frederik Sødring was born on 31 May 1809 in Aalborg, Denmark. He was the son of Peder Hansen Sødring, a merchant, and Ane Dorthea. During his childhood, he lived for a time in Norway alongside his parents, an experience that would later inform his connection to the landscape. This early exposure to the northern terrain likely helped shape his perspective before he ever picked up a brush for formal study.
In 1825, he moved to Copenhagen to begin his training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His education began under the guidance of Jens Peter Møller. While his early instruction provided a foundation in technique, his artistic direction was most deeply shaped by the romantic art of Johan Christian Dahl. This influence helped steer him toward the specific style of landscape painting that would define his career.
Travels and Artistic Development
Sødring’s early years were shaped by a restless need to see the landscapes he sought to paint. Between 1829 and 1831, he moved through Norway and Germany, using his time in Munich to refine his technique. These early excursions provided a foundation for his later work, as he learned to translate the physical world onto canvas. His connection to the natural world grew through these movements, which eventually led him back to the rugged terrain of Norway and Southern Sweden between 1832 and 1836. He would return to these regions again in 1847.
His professional standing grew alongside his travels. Between 1836 and 1838, he was awarded the Fund ad Usus Publicos, a period during which he focused his attention on Germany, specifically Munich. This time spent in the German landscape helped shape his perspective as a painter. In 1843, he traveled to Paris, adding the French influence to his growing repertoire of experiences. Each of these trips left a mark on his later paintings, as he brought back the light and atmosphere of the Rhine, Southern Germany, and Tyrol to his studio in Denmark.
Exhibitions and Professional Career
Sødring established himself within the Danish art scene through consistent participation in the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. His presence there was steady, with exhibitions spanning from 1828 through 1836, and again between 1838 and 1840. He continued to show his work at Charlottenborg in the years 1842–47 and finally in 1858. These appearances allowed him to maintain a professional connection to the Danish art community throughout much of his working life.
His interests often led him away from the familiar landscapes of his home. He frequently exhibited scenes from the Rhine, Southern Germany, and Tyrol, bringing the atmosphere of these distant regions to Danish audiences. In 1843, his work reached beyond Denmark, with exhibitions held at the Salon in Paris and at the University of Copenhagen. He was among the few Danish artists of his time who looked toward the Dresden school of Romantic landscape painting, a choice that helped shape his specific approach to the natural world.
Key Works and Notable Paintings
Sødring’s brush often found its way to the rugged edges of the Danish coast. In 1831, he captured the starkness of the landscape in The Chalk Cliffs at Møn and The Summer Spire on the Chalk Cliffs of Møn. These works from that year show a keen interest in the dramatic textures of the shoreline. His ability to translate the movement of nature was evident as early as 1829 with Rushing Brook, a piece that focused on the energy of water in a forest setting.
As his travels took him through different landscapes, his subject matter shifted to reflect the places he visited. He painted Norsk fjeldlandskab med person og bjælkehytte and the Rønneby Waterfall at Blekinge, Sweden, showing a preference for the wilder, more untamed aspects of the North. His compositions often sought to find order within the natural world, whether he was looking at the quiet woods or the open sky.
Later in his career, his work moved toward more structured or specific scenes. He produced View of the Uncompleted Frederik's Church in 1835 and View of Bregentved Forest, Sjaeeland during the mid 1830s. He also turned his attention to the urban environment with View of Marmorpladsen, Copenhagen. These paintings reflect a life spent observing the changing light and shapes of both the natural and built environments.

Personal Life and Marriage
In 1842, Sødring’s life took a significant turn when he married Henriette Marie de Bang. She was the daughter of Niels de Bang and Cathrine Amalie Henriette, coming from a family of wealthy landowners based in Næstved. This union brought more than just companionship; through the marriage, Sødring received a sizable dowry that provided a degree of financial stability.
The couple’s life together was marked by a sense of legacy and care for the artistic community. Upon his death in Hellerup, Denmark, Sødring left behind a substantial bequest of 30,000 thalers to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His final wishes were focused on supporting those who shared his passion for the landscape. He established the Sødringske Opmuntringspræmie, a scholarship intended for the annual Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. Furthermore, he provided funds to offer support to elderly landscape artists and the widows of painters, ensuring that his personal resources would continue to assist others in the profession.
