1 Step one of four

On which medium should it be printed?

Canvas is printed with giclée inks and can be stretched or framed like a painting; paper comes flat, or framed behind glass.

2 Step two of four

Which size would you like?

These sizes keep the proportions of the original painting. The drawing shows your choice on a wall, above a two-metre sofa.

height

Type the width and the height you need, to fit your frame or your wall. A print can only be cut, never made bigger than the picture, so a size with a different shape loses a part of the image. We send you a digital mockup to approve before we print anything. The picture shown on this page does not show the real cut — only the mockup does.

For artworks or reproductions larger than 105 cm (approximately 41 inches) on any side, the frame will be shipped as a kit, disassembled. This method ensures safe delivery and prevents damage during transport.

Professional assembly required - this is not a DIY product.
The kit must be assembled and the canvas stretched by an experienced professional framer, using wood glue (not supplied), a canvas stretching plier and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries. Incorrect assembly or uneven canvas tension can permanently damage the artwork and is not covered by our warranty.

  • All solid wood bars are included, precisely cut to size.

  • Assembled with the screws provided, plus wood glue for the corner joints, which is not supplied and must be sourced by your framer.

  • Professional tools are required and not included: a canvas stretching plier (tensioner) and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries.

Important:
The corner joints require wood glue, the bars must be held with clamps until the glue is fully dry, and tightening the canvas on the assembled frame requires a canvas stretching plier. None of these are included in the kit. Please arrange an experienced professional framer before ordering this size.

Charles Johann Palmié

Charles Johann Palmié

1863 - 1911, Germany

Artist Biography

The Light of the Naabtal

The air in Kallmünz carries a specific weight, a stillness that once drew dozens of painters to the banks of the Naab River. In 1901, Charles Johann Palmié and his wife, the flower painter Marie Kapferer, opened an inn here, turning this small German settlement into a magnet for the creative spirit. Palmié called it the "pearl of the Naabtal." He was a man of large scales and shimmering light, a painter who sought the essence of atmosphere through the lens of Neo-Impressionism. His brushwork moved away from the rigid lines of his early training toward a more fluid, pointillist approach that captured the fleeting movement of mist and water.

His early years were defined by the physical labor of decoration. At fourteen, he was an apprentice under the court theater decoration painter Rieck in Dresden. This foundation in large-scale, colorful renovation work surfaced in 1883 when he was commissioned to decorate the Leonhardi Museum. By the time he moved to Munich in 1884 to study under August Fink, he was already a man of established reputation, his work appearing in the Munich Glass Palace. He was a painter of the landscape, finding his most profound subjects in the Alps, the Altmühltal, the Wörnitz, and the Danube.

The Giverny Influence

A shift occurs in the way Palmié perceives the world when he moves toward the French countryside. The influence of Claude Monet is palpable, particularly during the summer of 1906 when Palmié lived and painted in Giverny. This period marked a departure from traditional representation. He began to chase the way light dissolves form, pushing his canvases toward the threshold of abstraction. His work from this era focuses on the interplay of atmosphere and color, seeking to pin down the very air between the eye and the subject.

His artistic evolution is marked by several distinct phases and associations:

  • The decorative training in Dresden under Rieck.
  • The transition to Munich and the study of August Fink.
  • The Neo-Impressionist explorations in the Altmühltal and Danube regions.
  • The pursuit of light and atmosphere in Giverny, France.

The Secessionist Friction

The year 1909 brings a moment of intense friction within the Munich art scene. Palmié finds himself at the center of a radical movement, becoming a founding member of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München (NKVM). He stands alongside Wassily Kandinsky, Alexei Jawlensky, and Gabriele Münter. This group would eventually prefigure Der Blaue Reiter, acting as a pathfinder for the modern art that would define 20th-century Germany. However, the unity was short-lived. Artistic differences emerged, and Palmié resigned before the first NKVM exhibition ever opened its doors in the winter of 1909.

This departure left him a solitary figure in the wake of the modernist revolution he helped initiate. He died suddenly of a stroke in Munich on July 15, 1911. He left behind a body of work that bridged the gap between the romanticized 19th-century traditions of his youth and the radical, light-drenched abstraction of the coming era.
