Friedrich Preller the Elder

Friedrich Preller the Elder

1804 - 1878, Germany

Artist Biography

The Life of Friedrich Preller the Elder

Friedrich Preller the Elder was a German landscape painter and etcher whose life was deeply connected to the cultural centers of his time. Born on 25 April 1804 in Eisenach, he grew up in a region that would shape much of his artistic perspective. His presence in the art world was marked by a steady commitment to his craft, moving through various cities as he developed his skill and influence. He eventually settled in Weimar, a place that would remain a central part of his life until his death on 23 April 1878.

Artistry was a family matter for Preller. He was the father of the artist Friedrich Preller the Younger, ensuring that his creative legacy continued through his son. This connection highlights how deeply the practice of painting was woven into his personal existence. His work as a painter and etcher allowed him to observe the natural world and translate those observations into lasting visual records.

Throughout his years, Friedrich Preller the Elder moved between the quietude of landscape study and the structured life of a professional artist. His life was defined by these movements, from his early beginnings in Eisenach to his final days in Weimar. He lived through a period of significant change in German art, leaving behind a body of work that reflects his specific way of seeing the world around him.

Early Life and Artistic Training

Born in Eisenach, Friedrich Preller the Elder began his path toward becoming a painter by studying drawing in Weimar. His early years were shaped by the guidance of influential figures who recognized his potential. In 1821, following advice from Goethe, he moved to Dresden to continue his development. This period of study helped prepare him for the next steps of his education, which would eventually take him far beyond the borders of Germany.

His training became more formal as he moved through Europe. He traveled to Belgium, where he became a pupil at the academy in Antwerp. This period of study provided him with a foundation in the technical skills required for both landscape painting and etching. By 1827, his interests led him toward the south, and he spent the years until 1831 studying in Italy. These years abroad were fundamental to his development, allowing him to observe the light and landscapes that would later define his professional output.

Professional Career in Weimar

After his time studying in Italy, Preller returned to Weimar to begin a long and stable chapter of his life. In 1831, he received an appointment to the Weimar school of art. This position brought him closer to the center of the city's cultural life, as he stepped into a role previously held by Heinrich Meyer. By taking over as the head of the Weimar school of drawing, he became a central figure in the education of local artists.

His influence grew within the institution as the years passed. From 1832, he served as a professor at the Fürstlichen freien Zeichenschule in Weimar. In this capacity, he helped shape the next generation of painters, including his own son, Friedrich Preller the Younger. His presence in the school was a constant throughout much of his adult life, providing a sense of continuity to the local art scene. He remained tied to this place until his final days, eventually returning to Weimar where he died.

Major Commissions and Frescoes

Preller’s career was deeply intertwined with the patronage of the Weimar court. Between 1836 and 1848, he spent much of his time working on six frescoes centered on Thuringian subjects, a project commissioned by the grand duchess. This long-term engagement with the local landscape and history required a steady hand and a commitment to the grand scale of wall painting. His ability to translate the character of Thuringia into these large-scale works helped secure his position within the cultural life of the region.

His interest in classical themes often found expression through large-scale cycles. From 1834 to 1836, he produced six tempera pictures based on scenes from the Odyssey, which were created for the Roman House in Leipzig. This fascination with Homeric epic continued much later in his life. After returning from a visit to Italy in 1859, he turned his attention back to this subject, completing a series of frescoes illustrative of the Odyssey for the grand-ducal museum in 1861. These works are often considered his most significant contribution to the public art of Weimar.

Beyond these epic narratives, Preller also worked on more localized, theatrical themes. In the Wieland room of the grand-ducal Schloss at Weimar, he executed landscapes between 1836 and 1837 that featured scenes from Oberon. These works allowed him to blend his skill for landscape painting with the dramatic requirements of the room's setting.

Key Works and Notable Paintings

Preller’s brush often captured the shifting moods of the Mediterranean. His work from the period of 1828/1831, Italian Coastal Landscape with a Thunderstorm, reflects the dramatic weather he encountered during his time in Italy. Around 1831, he produced An Italianate Landscape with Shepherds, a piece that shows his interest in the quiet, pastoral life of the countryside. These landscapes were not merely studies of nature but were shaped by his travels and the influence of the artists he met in Rome.

His interest in classical literature also found expression through color and texture. Between 1832 and 1834, he executed Odysseus and Nausicaa, Scenes from the Odyssey using tempera. This choice of medium allowed him to explore the stories of the Odyssey in a way that felt connected to the ancient world. These works were part of a larger effort to bring mythological narratives to life through his unique perspective on the landscape.

Even in his more intimate sketches, the presence of his family is felt. A graphite drawing from about 1848, titled The Artist's Children: Friedrich, Emil, and Ernst, offers a glimpse into his private life. It provides a quiet contrast to his large-scale frescoes and expansive landscapes, showing the man behind the professional painter.
