A Seated Monkey, Jan Weenix, before 1685
Jan Weenix (1641 – 1719)
Jan Weenix (1641-1719): Dutch Baroque master renowned for richly detailed hunting still lifes, game paintings & landscapes. Admired for realism and vibrant color.
Against a light brown background is a skull monkey (A Squirrel Monkey), surrounded by a dark brown shadow, on a table edge or window sill. The animal holds a nut in its right leg, while its left front and hind leg clamps the edge of its substrate. His tail hangs smoothly over the edge, with the tip falling just outside the image plane. Meanwhile, the monkey draws the attention of bystanders or passers-by.
