Order your in four simple steps
Take your time. You can change any answer; the price in your order card follows each choice.
1 Step one of four
On which medium should it be printed?
Canvas is printed with giclée inks and can be stretched or framed like a painting; paper comes flat, or framed behind glass.
2 Step two of four
Which size would you like?
These sizes keep the proportions of the original painting. The drawing shows your choice on a wall, above a two-metre sofa.
Or give your own measurements
Pick from our preset sizes that match the artwork's original proportions.
Type the width and the height you need, to fit your frame or your wall. A print can only be cut, never made bigger than the picture, so a size with a different shape loses a part of the image. We send you a digital mockup to approve before we print anything. The picture shown on this page does not show the real cut — only the mockup does.
3 Step three of four

William Henry Davis
1786 - 1849
Artist Biography
Early Life, Family and Training
William Henry Davis was born in Watford, Hertfordshire. His family lived in a world closely tied to the traditions of the hunt and the land. In 1789, his father took up the role of huntsman to King George III. This connection to the sporting life ran through the household, as his brother Charles Davis became an artist and the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. Another brother, Richard Barrett Davis, also followed a path in painting, focusing on landscapes and animals.
The training of William Henry Davis took him far from the English countryside to Rome, where he studied the art of landscape painting. This time spent abroad shaped how he would later observe the natural world. He eventually settled in Chelsea, where he spent much of his working life. His early years and the influence of his brothers suggest a life spent observing the specific details of animals and the terrain they inhabit.
Patrons, Workshop and Commissions
Davis found a steady place within the circles of the British elite, securing positions that required a precise hand for animal subjects. In 1837, he was appointed animal painter to William IV, and by 1839, he held the same title for Queen Victoria. These roles reflected a career built on the specific demands of those who owned and bred livestock and horses. He moved between the study of landscape and the more structured requirements of portraiture, often focusing on the physical presence of animals in a setting.
Much of his work came from commissions to record specific animals. He spent significant time capturing the likenesses of horses and livestock, often working from life to satisfy the needs of his patrons. His connection to the Berwick family is seen in the many portraits he produced for them. These works, which include several studies of Hereford cattle, remain tied to the history of the estate at Attingham Park in Shropshire.

Where to See the Works Today
His paintings are held in various collections across the United Kingdom, often tucked away in the quiet corners of country estates and museums. At Calke Abbey, one can find his 1831 oil on canvas, A Grey Shorthorn Cow. The work sits there in the United Kingdom, a quiet study of livestock. In Shropshire, the Berwick Collection at Attingham Park holds his Hereford Cow, which was painted in 1852. This piece is part of a larger set of sixteen portraits of cattle reared at Cronkhill by Richard Noel-Hill.
Other works have found their way into specialized collections. The Museum of Lincolnshire Life keeps Prize Sheep, while the Royal Agricultural University Collection holds Five Leicester Sheep. There are also depictions of Three South Down sheep held within a collection, showing the breadth of his focus on the animals that defined the era's agricultural life.
