          Early Life, Family and Training

Born on 15 May 1834 in the Kazan Governorate, Valery Jacobi entered a world of shifting imperial boundaries. He was the elder brother of Pavel Jacobi, who would later become a notable figure in Russian ethnography and revolutionary circles. While his family roots were tied to the landed estate class, Valery’s early path was marked by a departure from traditional academic pursuits. He initially sought an education at Kazan University, but the pull of duty and the chaos of conflict intervened.

The outbreak of the Crimean War redirected his trajectory. Valery Jacobi enlisted in the Imperial Russian Army, serving within the Siberian Volunteer Corps. This period of military service provided a sharp contrast to the quietude of scholarly study. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1856, he made the decisive choice to abandon his university studies entirely. He turned his attention toward the visual arts, seeking a different kind of discipline.

His formal training began at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he remained a student from 1856 to 1861. It was during these formative years that he began to refine the technical precision that would define his later historical works. His time at the Academy was marked by early recognition, including a small gold medal for his 1860 painting, "Serene Holiday of a Beggar." This period of rigorous instruction provided the foundation for a career spent navigating the complex social and artistic hierarchies of the Russian Empire.

          Academic Career and Teaching

Jacobi’s formal ascent within the institutional hierarchy of Russian art was marked by early recognition. During his studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts, his talent was acknowledged with a small gold medal for his 1860 painting, "Serene Holiday of a Beggar." This achievement provided the momentum for a distinguished professional trajectory. By 1868, he had been elected as an Imperial Academician, a position that solidified his standing within the established artistic order of the era.

His influence extended from the studio to the lecture hall. In 1871, he attained the rank of professor, a role that allowed him to shape the next generation of painters. He dedicated much of his professional life to the Academy, serving as a teacher from 1878 to 1889. While his later years would see him living largely abroad, his decade of instruction in Saint Petersburg remained a central pillar of his career.

          Artistic Movements and Style

Jacobi’s relationship with the shifting currents of Russian art was marked by a fundamental tension. In 1870, he was among the founding members of the Peredvizhniki art society, a group that sought to bring art to the people and move away from strict academic traditions. However, his alignment with the movement was short-lived. By 1872, he was excluded from the society, a departure fueled by his skepticism toward their core ideals. He remained a conservative figure, often standing apart from the radical shifts occurring in the contemporary art scene.

His aesthetic leanings favored a more traditional approach, which frequently placed him at odds with the evolving sensibilities of his peers. While his technical skill was evident, his work often faced criticism for being purely decorative. Detractors argued that his compositions lacked the profound substance sought by the more progressive realists of the era. He focused his efforts on historical subjects, seeking to recreate the grandeur of the past through oil on canvas.

          Notable Historical Paintings

Jacobi’s brush often turned toward the grand narratives of the Russian past, seeking to reconstruct the atmosphere of previous eras through oil on canvas. In 1861, he produced "The Prisoner's Rest," a work that emerged during a formative period of his career. His interest in the ceremonial and the courtly became more pronounced as he matured. This is evident in "Jesters at the Court of Anna Ioanovna," painted in 1872, which looks back to the reign of Empress Anna Ioannovna. Such works focused on the specificities of court life and the visual splendor of the imperial era.

The artist also demonstrated a penchant for the architectural and the monumental. His 1878 work, "Ice Palace," remains a significant example of his ability to depict complex, structured environments. Later in his career, he turned his attention to the institutions that had shaped his own professional life. In 1889, he completed "The Inauguration of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg," a piece that captured a moment of significant institutional ceremony. Through these subjects, Jacobi attempted to fix the fleeting details of history within the permanence of paint.

          Later Years and Death

The final chapter of Jacobi's professional life began before the Imperial Academy of Arts underwent its reform in 1893. Having spent much of his career within the structured confines of Saint Petersburg, his retirement signaled a departure from the formal institutions of his youth. He sought a different environment, spending much of his remaining time living abroad. His travels took him through Algeria and France, moving away from the rigid academic circles that had once defined his daily existence.

This period of wandering eventually led him to the French Riviera. He died in Nice on 13 May 1902. His remains were laid to rest in the Caucade Cemetery, a quiet finality for a man who had navigated the complex tensions between academic tradition and the shifting currents of Russian art. He remains a figure of a specific era, a painter whose life traced the arc from the imperial service of the Russian Empire to the quietude of the Mediterranean coast.
