          Early Life and Artistic Training

Born in Macerata, Italy, on February 25, 1904, Gino Bonichi would eventually find his place in the history of Italian modernism under the pseudonym Scipione. His early years were marked by a move to Rome in 1909, a transition that would fundamentally shape his creative trajectory. It was in this city that the foundations of his visual language were laid, far from the provincial quietude of his birthplace.

Scipione’s formal education began at a remarkably young age. He enrolled at the Scuola Libera di Nudo of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, immersing himself in the study of the human form. This early training at the free school of the nude provided him with a rigorous technical grounding, even as his interests began to expand beyond the traditional boundaries of academic instruction. He was a man of both image and word, developing a dual identity as both a painter and a writer during these formative years.

The Roman School and Artistic Style

In the heart of Rome, Scipione helped forge a distinct aesthetic identity by co-founding the Scuola romana alongside Mario Mafai and Antonietta Raphael. This group sought a path separate from the officially sanctioned art of the Fascist era, drawing instead from the expressive currents of Expressionism. His work within this movement was never merely a mimicry of style; it was a deeply personal language shaped by mysticism and a private system of symbols. He moved through the visual world with a sense of the uncanny, blending elements of symbolism, surrealism, and expressionism into a singular, unsettling vision.

His technique relied on a violent use of color and a deliberate distortion of the human form. Rather than seeking anatomical accuracy, he embraced the deformation of anatomy to convey internal states. This approach resulted in dreamlike colorings that often felt detached from reality, creating a sense of tension between the subject and its environment. The figures in his compositions often appear stretched or altered, caught in a state of perpetual metamorphosis that emphasizes emotional weight over physical precision.

          Key Works and Major Exhibitions

The period between 1927 and the autumn of 1930 marked the height of his creative output. During these years, he produced several significant works that defined his unique approach to form and color. In 1929, he completed Still-life with a Bowler Hat and Still-life with a Feather, works that demonstrated his ability to transform ordinary objects through a distorted, expressive lens. By 1930, his presence in the Italian art scene was firmly established through major exhibitions. He exhibited Il ponte degli angeli that same year, contributing to a body of work that increasingly leaned into personal symbolism and a dreamlike quality.

His recognition extended to the most important institutional stages of the era. He was included in the Venice Biennale in 1930 and later participated in the first Rome Quadriennale in 1931. These appearances solidified his position within the avant-garde circles of the time. One of his notable portraits from this era is Il Cardinal Decano, created in 1930. This work reflected his fascination with ecclesiastical figures and his interest in the great masters, utilizing a violent use of color and anatomical deformation to achieve a profound emotional impact.

          Later Years and Death

The final chapter of Scipione's life was shaped by a long, persistent struggle with tuberculosis. This illness gradually diminished his physical strength, eventually dictating the terms of his creative output. During the last two years of his life, the heavy demands of oil painting became too much to bear. He was forced to abandon the canvas, turning instead to drawing as a more manageable way to express his vision.

His creative momentum was cut short by his early passing. He died in Arco on November 9, 1933. His life, though brief, left a mark on the Roman art scene through his involvement with the Scuola romana. His family connection to the arts continued through his nephew, the Italian painter Claudio Bonichi, who was born in 1943.
