          Biography

The Formative Years in Limerick and London

Born in Limerick, Ireland, the young man who would become Saint George Hare began his artistic path under the watchful eye of Nicholas Brophy at the Limerick School of Art. His talent was evident early on, leading him to secure a scholarship that carried him away from his home to the bustling streets of London. For seven years, he immersed himself in the rigorous training of the National Art Training School in South Kensington, a period that shaped his technical command of both oil and watercolour. He was a man of ambition, seeking to master the complexities of the human form and the weight of historical narrative.

His early success arrived with a gold medal for his history painting, Death of William the Conqueror, a work that earned him a place at the Royal Academy of Arts. This achievement signaled his arrival in the competitive London art scene. To sustain his practice, he turned to teaching, a common necessity for many painters of his era. He moved through the social and artistic circles of the city, eventually becoming a founding member of the Chelsea Arts Club and gaining election to prestigious institutions like the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

A Study of Form and Symbolism

Hare’s work often drifted toward the narrative and the figurative, frequently returning to the depiction of the female form. He possessed a particular interest in themes of confinement and vulnerability, a subject he explored through several striking images. His canvases often sought to tell a story through a single, suspended moment, using the human body to convey deeper, perhaps more psychological, meanings.

          • The Debutante

In The Gilded Cage, he presented a sleeping woman shackled by the wrists to a column, a scene where butterflies flutter past the captive figure. This recurring interest in shackled women suggests a preoccupation with the tension between beauty and restraint. His ability to handle light and shadow allowed him to create scenes that felt both grounded in reality and steeped in a quiet, symbolic drama.

          Legacy and Recognition

Throughout his life, Hare’s reputation was bolstered by the patronage of influential figures, such as Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Baronet, for whom he produced several portraits. His work was not confined to private collections; it was regularly exhibited in significant venues like the Walker Gallery in Liverpool and the Manchester City Art Gallery. Even the esteemed Sir Hugh Lane recognized his skill, including his work in the London Guildhall exhibition of Irish painters in 1906.

By the time of his death in London, his contributions to the art of his time were firmly established. His paintings found their way into permanent collections, including those held by the National Trust and the National Gallery of Victoria. He remains a figure of interest for those studying the intersection of Irish identity and the Victorian and Edwardian traditions of figurative painting.
