          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Robert West was born in Waterford, Ireland, in 1710. His upbringing was shaped by the civic life of his home city, as his father held the position of alderman and served as the mayor of Waterford in 1740. While the specific details of his childhood remain quiet, his path eventually led him away from the Irish coast toward the formal training of the continent.

Around 1735, West traveled to study drawing and painting at the French Academy. He worked under the guidance of François Boucher and Jean-Baptiste van Loo, absorbing the methods of the era. It is said that during this period of study, he was awarded the first medal of the French Academy, a recognition of his early technical skill in the studio.

In his private life, West was married to Mary. Together, they had two sons. His life as an artist, draughtsman, and teacher would eventually take root in Dublin, but his foundations were laid in the classrooms of France and the civic environment of Waterford.

          Patrons, Workshop and Commissions

In the late 1730s, West established a drawing school in George's Lane, Dublin. By around 1744, the Dublin Society began commissioning the school to instruct its pupils. This connection to the Society grew more formal in 1757, when the institution established a drawing school and appointed West as its Master. He held this position from the school's foundation until 1763.

The workspace moved in 1750 to Shaw's Court, located off Dame Street. This location served as a center for his teaching and the development of his students' skills. The school he helped lead would eventually evolve into the National College of Art and Design. His influence was felt through the structured instruction provided to those under his care in the Dublin art scene.

          Technique and Style

West focused much of his practice on the French rococo style. His hand found its most precise expression through life drawing, where he worked with the soft, immediate textures of crayon and chalk. He understood how these dry media could capture the nuances of the human form, a skill he passed on through his teaching. His approach to the medium was not merely about outline, but about the subtle shifts in tone that define muscle and skin.

There is a specific weight to his chalk drawings. One such work, a portrait of his student John O'Keeffe, adopts the Guido Reni style, showing a preference for classical, sculptural clarity even when working with softer materials. This technical precision had a ripple effect in the local art scene, as his methods left a mark on Dublin artists who worked with pastels. He taught his students to see the structure of a figure before applying the color.

          Circle, Rivals and Pupils

The studio in George's Lane was a place of constant movement and instruction. West did not work alone; James Mannin served as his assistant, focusing his own teaching on the specifics of landscape and ornament. The influence of the master extended through the hands of those he trained, some of whom found early recognition. In 1747, two of his pupils, George Barret and James Forrester, were noted for winning awards.

Observation was a central part of the training. A chalk drawing of the student John O'Keeffe, rendered in the Guido Reni style, was kept for study, remaining useful for students to copy as late as 1811. There is also a record of the act of teaching itself, seen in a 1758 drawing by Matthew William Peters, which captures Peters being drawn by West.

          Later Years and Death

The steady rhythm of West's teaching career faced a sudden disruption in 1763 when he began to suffer from a mental illness. This period of instability forced him away from his leadership role at the school. During his absence, the position of Master was held by Jacob Ennis. The connection to the institution remained, however, as West eventually returned to his post in 1770.

His return to the school was short-lived. He died in November 1770 at Lurgan Street, Dublin. The leadership of the school passed through his own bloodline, continuing the family's involvement in the craft. His son, Francis Robert West, took over as Master, followed later by his grandson, Robert Lucius West.
