A Life Shaped by Shadows and Light

In the heart of Paris, a young girl named Cornélie Barbe Hyacinthe Jacquemart grew up amidst the shifting fortunes of a family that moved from Meurthe to the capital. Her early years were marked by uncertainty, as her father passed away shortly after her birth, leaving her mother, Marie, to navigate life as a milliner. The trajectory of this young girl changed when she came under the care of Madame de Vatry, a woman of influence who recognized a spark of talent within the child. Through this connection, Nélie found herself immersed in the world of art, spending summers at the hunting lodge of Chaalis Abbey. It was here, surrounded by the quiet grandeur of the estate, that she began to refine her eye and develop the skills that would later define her career.

Her training was rigorous and unconventional. Because the official academies often barred women from certain types of study, Nélie sought knowledge in the workshops of established masters. She studied under Léon Cogniet, copying his works to learn the nuances of form and light. This period of intense preparation led to her first public exposure in 1858, when she captured the somber details of the funeral of Malka Kachwar, the Queen of Oudh, through sketches that were later published in L’Illustration. These early lithographs revealed a natural ability to observe the gravity of significant human moments.

          The Rise of a Portraitist

By the time she began exhibiting at the Salon in 1863, Nélie had established herself as a painter capable of capturing the essence of the era's most influential figures. Her work was characterized by a certain vigor and frankness that drew the attention of the juries. She did not merely paint faces; she documented the leaders of her time, from military men like Maréchal de Canrobert to political figures such as Adolphe Thiers. In 1866, the French government even purchased one of her works for display at the Palais des Tuileries.

Her travels further expanded her artistic horizons. In 1867, she journeyed to Italy to study under Ernest Hébert at the Villa Médicis in Rome. This exposure to Renaissance art deeply influenced her aesthetic sensibilities. While she continued to win medals at the Salon between 1868 and 1870, her focus began to shift toward the social circles of Paris. Her talent for portraiture eventually brought her into contact with Édouard André, a man from a prominent banking family. After painting his portrait in 1872, a connection was formed that would lead to their marriage in 1881.

A Legacy of Collection and Devotion

The union of Nélie and Édouard was a partnership of shared passion. Although their marriage involved complex legal arrangements regarding their separate properties, their lives became inextricably linked through their mutual love for art. Together, they traveled across Europe, Egypt, and Turkey, acquiring a vast array of treasures. Their collection grew to include:

          • Paintings by masters such as Rembrandt and Tiepolo
          • Italian Renaissance sculptures and frescoes
          • Fine furniture and 18th-century decorative arts
          • Exotic objects from China, Japan, and the Near East

Nélie’s role transitioned from that of a working artist to a formidable collector and patron. Even after she largely set aside her brushes following her marriage, her eye for beauty remained sharp. She continued to expand the collection, adding English paintings and precious medals. Upon her death in 1912, she ensured that her life's work and the treasures she had gathered would belong to the public. Through her bequest to the Institut de France, the mansion on Boulevard Haussmann and the Abbey de Chaalis were preserved, allowing the world to walk through the private, gilded world she and Édouard had built.
