          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Karl Caspar was born on 13 March 1879 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. His early years were shaped by the quiet surroundings of his birthplace before he moved toward formal study. He began his training at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, a path that eventually led him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. These years of study provided the technical foundation for a life spent working with color and form.

In 1905, Karl Caspar and Maria Filser traveled to Paris. Their connection was rooted in a shared history as childhood friends, a bond that deepened through their mutual commitment to art. They married in 1907, establishing a partnership that would remain a constant throughout their lives. This relationship was not merely personal but a shared existence of creative practice. In 1917, their family grew with the birth of their daughter, Felicitas.

          Artistic Career in Munich

Munich became the center of Caspar's professional life, a place where his presence grew through institutional involvement and teaching. His ties to organized art circles strengthened steadily; he became a member of the Stuttgarter Künstlerbund in 1904 and joined the Deutscher Künstlerbund in 1906. By 1913, he was part of the founding group of the Münchener Neue Secession, an association that included several other notable painters of the era. He eventually took on the responsibility of chairman for the Secession in 1919.

The Academy of Fine Arts in Munich held a significant place in his daily routine for many years. He held a professorship there from 1922 until 1937. This period of teaching ended abruptly when his religious-themed works were targeted by the Nazi regime, leading to his forced retirement and a move away from the city. He would eventually return to the Academy as a professor in 1946, reclaiming his position in the academic landscape of Munich after the war.

          Style and Religious Themes

Caspar’s brushwork carries the weight of two opposing forces. His paintings and drawings exist in the space where Impressionism and Expressionism meet, blending a certain lightness of touch with a more forceful, modern sensibility. He did not merely paint scenes; he sought to translate Christian-religious themes into a new, contemporary visual language. This choice of subject matter was a deliberate attempt to bring ancient spiritual narratives into the modern era through his specific way of seeing.

This commitment to religious imagery eventually brought him into conflict with the political climate of the 1930s. His Christianity-inspired works were targeted by the authorities and were removed from German museums and public collections. In 1937, his art was included in the Degenerate Art Exhibition organized by the Nazis. Following this, the very themes that defined his creative purpose led to his forced retirement from his teaching position in Munich.

          Later Years and Recognition

The political climate of 1937 forced a shift in Caspar's life. Following the Nazi regime's hostility toward his Christian-inspired works, he was removed from his teaching position and forced into retirement. He moved his family away from Munich, settling in Brannenburg, where he remained until his death in 1956.

The years following the war brought a return to his academic roots. In 1946, he was reappointed as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. His influence in the German art community continued through his involvement in institutional foundations and international exhibitions. He became a founding member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1948 and participated in the Venice Biennale that same year. By 1955, he was a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts.

His contributions to German culture were recognized through several honors. In 1950, he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. His life's work, which had been suppressed during the previous decade, was once again part of the public record through these appointments and honors.

          Notable Works and Artworks

Much of Caspar's output focuses on the quiet weight of religious narrative. His Passion Altar, created between 1916 and 1917, remains in the crypt of the Frauenkirche. This work sits in a space of shadow and stone, away from the light of the main nave. In 1919, he produced Die schlafenden Jünger, a piece that captures a moment of stillness and human frailty. His ability to translate spiritual themes into a modern visual language is evident in these earlier compositions.

The mid-1920s saw him returning to specific figures and moments of transition. In 1926, he painted Ostern / Auferstehung and Felicitas. These works reflect a period of focused production. Earlier, in 1912, he worked on Judith mit dem Haupt des Holofernes, a subject that allowed for a more dramatic exploration of form and tension. His hands moved between the heavy textures of oil and the precise lines of lithography, as seen in his 1919 work Johannes auf Patmos.

          Students and Artistic Circles

Caspar moved within the circles of the Münchener Neue Secession, a group he helped found in 1913. He shared this space with figures such as Paul Klee and Alexander Kanoldt. These associations placed him at the center of a shifting landscape in Munich, where the boundaries of modern painting were being actively redrawn.

His influence extended into the studios of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he taught for many years. He guided several artists who would go on to shape the next generation, including Joseph Loher and Gretel Loher-Schmeck. His classroom also saw the development of Fred Thieler, Richard Stumm, Peter Paul Etz, and Walter Zimmermann. These students carried forward the technical and expressive lessons learned under his guidance.

Where to See His Works Today

His paintings and graphic works have found their way into several permanent collections across Europe and North America. In Germany, you can find his pieces at the Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladbach and the Zeppelin Museum. His presence in Poland is marked by works held at the Sztuki Museum in Łódź.

Across the Atlantic, his art is part of the collections in the United States. The Faulconer Gallery in Grinnell, Iowa, maintains his work, as does the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. These locations hold different pieces of his output, from his paintings to his various graphic works.
