          Biography

The Academy and the European Light

In the halls of the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City, the young José Salomé Pina learned to see through the eyes of Pelegrí Clavé i Roqué. This Spanish painter, tied to the Nazarene movement, brought a specific way of handling form and light to his student. By 1852, at twenty-two years old, Pina was already working on pieces like Agar e Ismael. His hands moved toward religious subjects, finding a steady rhythm in the stories of the Bible.

The path led him away from Mexico to the studios of Europe. In 1854, a pension brought him to Rome, where he worked on San Carlos Borromeo. Later, in 1856, a grant allowed him to sit in the studio of Charles Gleyre in Paris. There, among the works of others, he painted Abraham and Isaac and Dante and Virgil. These canvases, which now reside in the MUNAL in Mexico City, carry the traces of those quiet hours spent studying in foreign studios.

A Life Between Rome and Mexico

The years following his time in Paris saw a return to the classical traditions of Italy. In 1860, Pina moved back to Rome to study under Consoni and Gariot. He focused on the classics, a discipline that would later inform his role as a teacher. His work often touched upon the heavy weight of history and faith. In 1865, he attempted a large commission to mark Archduke Maximilian’s visit to Rome to see Pope Pius IX. While the finished painting does not exist, the sketches left in the Museo Nacional de Historia suggest he used photographs to guide his hand.

By 1869, the student had become the professor at the Academy of San Carlos. His classroom was a place where new generations learned the craft. Among those who sat in his lessons were Germán Gedovius and Diego Rivera. He taught them the techniques he had gathered from the Nazarene influence and the French studios.

          The Shift in Sight

As time passed, the tastes of the Mexican art world began to drift. The religious themes that Pina held so closely—seen in works like Sansón y Dalila or La Piedad—started to lose their hold on the contemporary scene. His students moved toward different subjects, leaving his traditional approach behind. He lived through this transition, eventually passing away in Tacubaya in 1909.

His legacy remains tied to the foundations of Mexican painting. While the era of religious art faded, his presence is still felt in the institutions he helped shape. His works remain scattered across collections like the Museo Nacional de Arte and the Museo del Prado, holding onto the specific light of a nineteenth-century tradition.
