          Early Life, Family and Training

Born in 1666 in Asti, within the Piedmont region, Giovanni Felice Ramelli was destined for a life shaped by the quiet discipline of the church. His early years were defined by a religious calling that would eventually lead him into the heart of Roman ecclesiastical life. He entered the monastic life as a monk in the abbey of Santa Andrea in Vercelli, a setting that provided the foundational structure for his later pursuits. From there, his path moved toward the abbey of San Pietro in Gattinara.

It was in Vercelli that the technical foundations of his craft began to take shape. He underwent his initial training under the guidance of the monk Danese Rho, a specialist in the delicate art of manuscript illumination. This early exposure to the precision required for miniature work and the careful handling of pigments would become a defining characteristic of his later output. The meticulous nature of illumination provided the necessary discipline for a man who would eventually master the art of the portrait miniature.

          Patrons, Workshop and Commissions

Ramelli’s life was defined by a dual existence, moving between the quietude of monastic life and the high-stakes patronage of Rome. His ascent within the church was steady; he was named abbott of Santa Maria Nova of Asti in 1707, a position that preceded his significant appointment by Pope Clement XI Albani. By 1717, he had been made the abbot in perpetuity of the Augustinian St John Lateran. This proximity to the Papacy provided him with unique access to the Vatican library and the influential circles of the Roman Baroque, allowing him to act as a vital intermediary for significant cultural projects.

His influence extended into the realm of printmaking and engraving through his connection to Daniel Seiter. Ramelli arranged a commission to have the Byzantine Menologion of Basil II engraved onto copper plates, a task requiring both scholarly precision and artistic skill. His ability to navigate these high-level circles also brought him to the court of the King of Sardinia. There, he was tasked with the delicate work of painting portraits of celebrated painters, often working from original copies held in the Florentine Gallery.

In his later years, his patronage took a more direct form through his own commissions. In 1739, he commissioned a canvas from Subleyras depicting Christ in the House of Simon, intended for the church of Santa Maria Nuova in Asti. This act of patronage coincided with his active involvement in the Academy of St Luke, where he had been a member since 1722. His life remained a balance of spiritual duty and the meticulous demands of the miniature and the portrait.

          Technique and Style

Ramelli’s hand found its greatest expression in the delicate, controlled realm of portrait miniatures. While the Baroque period often favored the grand and the expansive, he turned his attention toward the minute, demonstrating a precision that allowed him to excel in capturing the likeness of his subjects on a small scale. His technical facility was such that he was frequently called upon to reproduce the works of others, specifically the pastel compositions of Rosalba Carriera and the paintings of Maria Felice Tibaldi. These miniature copies required a disciplined hand to translate the textures and nuances of larger works into a condensed format.

His mastery of the miniature was recognized by his peers and the institutional authorities of Rome. In 1722, he was named an Academic of Merit of the Academy of St Luke, a distinction that acknowledged his technical skill and his standing within the artistic community. This recognition followed a career spent navigating the intersection of religious devotion and secular portraiture. His ability to render detail with such economy of scale suggests a painter deeply attuned to the subtle shifts of light and form, a necessity for anyone working within the confines of a miniature format.

Where to See the Works Today

The survival of Ramelli’s delicate handiwork is scattered across several European collections, often tucked away in specialized galleries. In the Gallery of Bologna, one finds his miniatures of Guido Reni, Lorenzo Pasinelli, and Giovanni Gioseffo Dal Sole. These small-scale portraits offer a glimpse into the artist's skill in capturing the likenesses of his contemporaries. Elsewhere, a female portrait remains held in Dresden, while the Palazzo Graziani in Pesaro preserves a miniature painting of a Shepherd with dead game.

His religious and allegorical subjects are similarly distributed. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam maintains a miniature of Joseph and Potiphar by Carlo Cignani, a work that highlights his ability to translate larger compositions into intimate formats. In Padua, the University holds a miniature of the Virgin and Child. These dispersed pieces reflect the reach of his reputation during the Baroque period, spanning from the Italian peninsula to the courts of Northern Europe.
