          Early Life, Family and Training

The story of Daniel Mijtens the Younger begins in The Hague, where he entered the world on 7 August 1644. He was born into a lineage of painters, the son of Daniel Mytens the Elder. While some early records suggest his father may have been Jan Mijtens, the boy was raised within the traditions of a family deeply rooted in the craft. This domestic setting provided him with an immediate and intimate introduction to the tools and pigments of the trade.

His education was shaped by the hands of those closest to him. Daniel Mijtens the Younger studied under his father, who held the prestigious position of court painter in The Hague. This apprenticeship was further strengthened by the guidance of his uncle, ensuring that the techniques of his ancestors were passed directly into his young hands. Through this lineage of instruction, he learned to navigate the complexities of light and form that would define his later years as a painter of the Dutch Golden Age.

Activity in Italy and The Hague

In 1666, the artist felt the pull of the south and traveled to Italy to expand his horizons. It was there that he moved within circles of great talent, forming a friendship with Carlo Maratta and seeking the guidance of Johann Carl Loth. Such immersion in the Italian tradition shaped his hand and his eye. During these years of wandering, he found a brotherhood among the Bentvueghels, a group of artists who embraced a shared identity. It was within this spirited company that he adopted the nickname "Bontekraay," which translates to The Hooded Crow.

By 1672, he had returned to The Hague, where he would remain until his death in 1688. He became an active figure in the local art community, helping to shape its formal structures. He was among the forty-eight men who signed the founding charter of the Confrerie Pictura in The Hague. This commitment to the guild and the professional life of painters marked his later years in the city, as he established himself firmly within the Dutch artistic landscape.

          Notable Works and Collections

The brush of Mijtens captured the grace of myth and the complexities of human lineage with equal fervor. Around 1675, he turned his attention to the celestial, rendering Danaë and the shower of gold, a work that sought to translate divine intervention into pigment. Not long after, in about 1676, he moved from the heavens to the heroic, depicting Meleager Presents the head of the Calydonian Boar to Atalanta. These mythological subjects allowed him to explore the dramatic tension and the physical presence of legendary figures, proving his ability to handle both the ethereal and the visceral.

His talent for capturing the essence of a family was perhaps most clearly realized in his 1679 creation, the Allegorizing Group Portrait of the Children of Diederic. This ambitious composition, which depicts the children of Diederic Pietersz van Leyden van Leeuwen and Alida Paets, uses a garden setting and classical motifs to weave a narrative of lineage and legacy. It is a work of great detail, where each child is assigned a symbolic attribute, from a globe to a sword, to tell their story. This significant piece remains preserved today within the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
