          Biography

A Life Shaped by Rome and Lorraine

Born in Nancy within the Duchy of Lorraine, Claude Charles began his path under the guidance of Jean-George Gérard in Épinal. This early training in religious scenes provided the foundation for a much larger ambition. At only sixteen years of age, he departed for Rome, a move that would fundamentally alter the course of his brushwork. For nine years, he immersed himself in the Roman art scene, laboring alongside Giovanni Maria Morandi and Carlo Maratt. These long years of study allowed him to absorb the classical weight and grace of the Italian tradition.

His travels eventually led him to Paris, where he sought the company of the great masters by copying the works of Poussin in the gallery of Paul Fréart de Chantelou. This period of imitation was not merely academic; it was a way to internalize the logic and structure of classical composition. When he finally returned to Nancy in 1688, he brought with him a refined technique that blended the dramatic energy of the Baroque with more traditional, orderly elements. He settled into local life, marrying Anne Racle, whose family possessed the skills of goldsmiths and engravers.

The Painter of the Ducal Court

Upon his return to his homeland, Charles rose to positions of significant authority and prestige. In 1702, he was named the first Director of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Nancy. His talent soon caught the eye of the ruling nobility, and by 1703, he had been appointed as the Herald and court painter to Leopold, Duke of Lorraine. This role required him to be more than a mere creator of images; he also served as a Herald-at-Arms, a position that blended his artistic life with the formal ceremonies of the court.

His studio became a place of instruction for the next generation of Lorraine artists. Students such as Jean-Charles François, Jean Girardet, Claude Jacquart, and Joseph Gilles learned to navigate the complexities of both historical and decorative painting under his watchful eye. His work often moved beyond the canvas to include the design of theatrical sets, a pursuit he shared with the Galli da Bibiana family, whom he had known during his Roman years. This versatility allowed him to leave a mark on the very architecture and atmosphere of the Duchy.

          Allegory and Devotion in Paint

The works produced by Charles often sought to communicate complex ideas through symbolic figures. His allegorical compositions, such as those representing Architecture, Sculpture, Chorography, and Mathematics, found a home within the Château de Lunéville. These pieces utilized a mixture of styles to present intellectual concepts through visual storytelling. He was equally capable of handling the heavy themes of religious devotion, as seen in his depictions of Saint Benoit conversing with his sister Scholastique or the healing of a paralytic by Peter.

His ability to work across different media and scales is evident in his varied output. Some of his pieces were executed with precision on copper, such as his depiction of Saint John the Baptist with angels, while others were large-scale oil paintings on canvas designed for grander settings. The legacy of his hand is found in many places, with twenty-seven of his works officially classified as historical monuments. He remained a fixture of Nancy until his death in 1747, leaving behind a body of work that bridged the gap between the classical traditions of Italy and the local pride of Lorraine.
