          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Carl Fahringer was born on 25 December 1874 in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. He grew up in a household where science and art shared a common space, as his brother, Josef Fahringer, pursued a career as a zoologist. This familial connection to the natural world would later find its way into the quiet observations of Carl's own work.

His formal training began in Vienna. From 1892 to 1897, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. During these years, he sat in the studios of Sigmund l'Allemand, Christian Griepenkerl, and August Eisenmenger. These early years in Vienna provided the technical foundation for his later explorations of landscape and form.

Seeking further instruction, he moved to Munich, where he studied from 1898 to 1902. In Munich, he worked under the guidance of Carl Marr. This period of study helped shape the way he approached the subjects he would eventually carry with him through his travels and his later teaching career.

          War Service and Artistic Travels

When the First World War broke out, Fahringer volunteered for the Austro-Hungarian army, serving as a Landsturmleutnant. From 1915, his perspective shifted toward the front lines, where he worked as a war painter. He spent time documenting the realities of the conflict in Galicia and along the Italian front. These experiences placed him directly in the middle of the shifting landscapes and the specific conditions of the war.

His travels took him far beyond the battlefields. He moved through Italy, the Balkans, Turkey, and Egypt, collecting sights and textures from these diverse regions. Later, his path led to the Netherlands, where he spent time working in Hoorn and Delft. He also traveled to the Dutch East Indies, finding himself in Java and Bali, capturing the specific light and life of those islands.

          Academic Career and Later Years

Fahringer’s presence in the Viennese art scene was marked by his involvement in established circles. He was a member of the Hagenbund from 1903 to 1906, and later joined the Genossenschaft Bildender Künstler in 1907. These affiliations placed him among the active creative community during a transformative period for Austrian art.

His influence moved from the studio to the lecture hall in 1929, when he was appointed as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He held this chair for sixteen years, teaching until 1945. During this time, his focus remained on the study of animals and landscapes. His teaching provided a structured environment for students to observe the natural world, much like the detailed sketches and paintings he produced throughout his life.

He remained in Vienna until his death on 4 February 1952. His final resting place is a grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery, located in Group 12 C, Row 16, Number 8.

          Artistic Style and Subject Matter

Fahringer’s hand moved through many mediums, leaving behind hundreds of works that range from delicate watercolors and drawings to heavy oil paintings. He worked as a painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, often focusing his attention on the quiet details of the natural world. His specialization lay in animal and landscape painting, where he captured the specific textures of fur and the shifting light of an open field. He had a way of observing the world that felt both precise and unhurried.

During his time on the front lines, his focus shifted toward the harsh realities of the landscape. He recorded the specific, gritty details of trench warfare, particularly within the rugged terrain of the alpine region. These works were not mere sketches but observations of a specific, difficult environment. Much of this imagery was later reproduced on postcards for the Red Cross, bringing the visual reality of the war to a wider audience.

His travels also brought new subjects into his studio. He spent time in the Netherlands, working in places like Hoorn and Delft, and traveled through the Balkans, Turkey, Egypt, and the Dutch East Indies. These journeys expanded his repertoire to include scenes from Java and Bali, as well as various Asian subjects. Whether he was painting a street scene in a Dutch town or a landscape in a distant territory, he remained a steady observer of the places he visited.

          Notable Works and Collections

His hands often turned to the quiet rhythms of rural and coastal life. In 1920, he captured a Street in Horn, a scene that reflects the stillness of the era. Around the 1920s, he produced Milking of the Cows, a work that focuses on the repetitive, steady motions of farm labor. These pieces show a steady interest in the way light and shadow settle on everyday subjects, whether in a village square or a barnyard.

The artist also looked toward the animal kingdom and the sea. His 1924 work, Löwenkopf, shows a close attention to form. Later, in 1934, he produced Fishermen on the quay near the Hoofdtoren, Hoorn, a gouache on paper that captures a specific moment by the water. His sketches and paintings from this period often found their way into the hands of others, with many of his works being reproduced as postcards for the Red Cross.
