          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Alec Cobbe was born Richard Alexander Charles Cobbe on 9 January 1945 in Dublin. His early years were shaped by the family's move to Newbridge House following the death of his father. This transition into the house, a Palladian villa, marked a significant shift in his upbringing. He grew up in a setting where electricity was not introduced until 1967, living through a childhood lit by oil lamps and warmed by fires.

His path initially led toward medicine rather than the arts. He studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where his hand found a different kind of precision; he won a prize for anatomical drawing during his time there. After completing his clinical training at the London Hospital, he chose to leave medical studies behind. He turned his attention toward the technical side of art, training as a paintings conservator at the Tate Gallery.

Career as a Restorer and Designer

After leaving his medical studies, Cobbe turned toward the technical side of art, training as a picture restorer at the Tate Gallery and the Courtauld Institute of Art. His early professional years were spent working with the physical surfaces of paintings. He held positions at the Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery and later at the Hamilton Kerr Institute of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. These years were spent in close contact with the material reality of old works, learning how they age and how they might be stabilized.

His focus eventually shifted from the individual object to the way collections occupied a room. He developed a specialty in the design of historic interiors and the reorganization of picture hanging schemes. This work involved looking at how light and space interact with a series of paintings within a specific architectural setting. He moved between the public and private spheres, applying these methods to the arrangement of art in many significant houses.

His design schemes were implemented in a wide variety of locations across the United Kingdom and Ireland. In England, his work touched the walls of Petworth, Goodwood, Kenwood, Sledmere, Kedleston, and Castle Howard. He also worked on the interiors of Burghley, Harewood, and Hatfield House. In Ireland, his hand was seen in the layouts of Castle Coole, Castletown Cox, Castletown House, Emo Court, Hillsborough Castle, and Russborough.

          Patrons, Workshop and Commissions

His work often took the form of the containers meant to hold history. He spent much of his time designing the specific ways objects are seen, creating display cases for the Clive Museum at Powis Castle and designing cases for drawing and print exhibitions at Windsor Castle. These were not merely functional items but carefully considered arrangements. He applied this same attention to the Stuart relics at Holyroodhouse, where he designed ornate cases to house them. At the Sitwell Museum at Renishaw Hall, his hand was seen in the design of the space itself.

Beyond these structural commissions, he produced a large number of painted graphic designs. These were executed for various clients, including the Prince of Wales. His approach to these designs was part of a broader career spent reorganizing how paintings are hung in historic houses. This body of work, including his various design schemes, was eventually acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum.

          The Cobbe Collection and Publications

Beyond his work with interiors and restoration, Cobbe was a dedicated collector of musical instruments. He assembled the Cobbe Collection of Composers’ Keyboard instruments, a group of historic pieces that reached back to the 16th century. Many of these instruments had direct connections to famous composers. This collection is kept at Hatchlands Park, the Surrey house he leased starting in 1984.

His writing often focused on the history of these instruments and the architecture of the houses they inhabited. He authored 300 Years of Composers’ Instruments in 2014 and Chopin’s Swansong, the pianos of his last performances in 2010. His research also extended to the specific history of Irish architecture and decorative arts, including James Gibbs in Ireland in 2002 and The Cobbe Cabinet of Curiosities in 2014.

In his later years, his interests turned toward the specific patterns and histories of porcelain. He wrote two volumes regarding Lady Betty Cobbe’s ‘Peacock’ China, a Worcester porcelain service. These books, published in 2019, are titled Birds, Bugs and Butterflies: Lady Betty Cobbe’s ‘Peacock’ China and Birds, Bugs and Butterflies: A Biography of an Irish Service of Worcester Porcelain.

          Later Years and Death

In the years following his marriage to the Honourable Isabel Anne Marie Henrietta Dillon on 25 July 1970, Cobbe continued to move through the spaces of historic houses and collections. His family connections remained notable; he was the uncle to the Olympic gold medal winning rower Constantine Louloudis. His life remained tied to the quiet work of preservation and the stewardship of his own gathered objects.

On 13 February 2026, Cobbe was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). This recognition came shortly before his death. He died at home on 31 March 2026, at the age of 81.
